Ferret Rescue & Education Society (FRES)

Since 2002, nearly 500 ferrets have walked through FRES’s doors. Rather than housing all foster ferrets in a shelter, FRES relies on volunteer foster homes to provide homes to individual ferrets. Our committed volunteers assist FRES in its goal to find a permanent home for all of the ferrets surrendered to us. FRES provides all necessary supplies and veterinary care, and if necessary, rehabilitation for all abused, unwanted, and abandoned ferrets regardless of their health status.

EDUCATION: Being the sole ferret rescue organization in Calgary and a trusted resource on these special pets, FRES places a high priority on responsible pet ownership through EDUCATION. Through partnerships with Calgary organizations and businesses, FRES provides regular education sessions to a wide variety of cohorts throughout our city.

CONSULTATION: FRES is often consulted by current and potential ferret owners who are in need of information, resources or support.

SOCIAL EVENTS: FRES organizes and executes several social functions throughout the year, ranging from a pledged walk-a-thon to ferret-inspired Halloween, beach and Christmas parties. These events are a fantastic way for FRES members to interact and for those who are considering the addition of a ferret or two into their home to learn more about ferrets from other ferret owners and the ferrets themselves.

Rescue FAQs

The Ferret Rescue & Education Society (FRES) is a non-profit, charitable organization that was started by a group of devoted ferret owners in the Calgary area who recognized the need for a locally based rescue dedicated to ferrets. Since 2002, FRES has been adopting ferrets out to loving homes throughout Alberta, BC and Saskatchewan.

All potential foster homes and adopters must complete a pre-screen questionnaire and in-home assessment.

PRE-SCREEN QUESTIONNAIRE: Gives FRES volunteers an idea of how much potential foster homes and adopters know about ferrets and their reasons for wanting one, with the intention of learning about the potential foster/adopter and to find out which ferret(s) would best suit their home.

IN-HOME ASSESSMENT: Allows FRES to make sure that the home they are going to be putting a ferret in is a safe and happy one. It also allows FRES the opportunity to ensure that potential foster and adoptive homes are ferretproofed, preventing problems before they happen.

Once these two steps have been completed successfully, a ferret can be placed in the home. While adopters have the opportunity to meet several ferrets prior to adopting, FRES takes great care in matching the right ferret with the right family, and will not place a ferret in a particular home if it is not the right match. All adopters are required to sign an adoption contract.

FEES:
$150 under 1 year of age
$100 equal to or over 1 year of age
$50 for special needs* ferrets
Bonded Pairs/Groups: To minimize stress to the ferrets, FRES does not separate bonded cage mates upon their arrival to our Society or at the time of adoption. The adoption fee will be paid in full for one ferret and a 20% discount will be applied to the cost of each additional ferret in the group that is of an equal or lesser adoption fee.
