Additional adoption info

All prospective adopters are asked to complete an Adoption Questionnaire. A background check is done and if everything checks out, the adoption can proceed. Adoption fees include spay/neuter; heartworm test and 5 way vaccinations for dogs, license and microchip; feline leukemia test and 3 way vaccinations for cats. Adoption fees for dogs is $125 and for cats is $80.

The Henry County Humane Society is firmly committed to the task of creating a better community through the prevention of cruelty to animals and by fostering ongoing education to instill humane principles in all residents. It is this commitment to caring that forms the foundation upon which the HCHS is built.

The HCHS was founded in 1981 and in 1984 we began operating the county's first full-service animal shelter.

The HCHS relies heavily on donations from the public. Every donation made is appreciated and is always tax-deductible. Volunteers are always needed. There are many ways to volunteer. Please contact the shelter to find out how you can help!

When someone is breeding puppies or breeding kittens, they are creating new dogs and cats who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog, cat, puppy or kitten and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale or buy a cat for sale from a puppy breeder or a kitten breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes.

So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder or buying a cat or kitten for sale from a cat breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog, adopt a cat, adopt a puppy or adopt a kitten at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.
