SPCA of Western Quebec

The SPCA of Western Quebec is a no-kill animal shelter which accepts animals who can no longer be kept by their owner, as well as animals transferred from other shelters and rescues.

All of our animals receive an examination by our veterinarian before entering the quarantine period of their stay with us. While visiting with the vet, vaccinations are brought up to date as necessary, and any ailments found upon exam are prescribed the necessary treatment(s).

Prior to the end of their quarantine, our animals are sent to be spayed and neutered, after which time they can be made available for adoption. Those puppies and kittens who are too young for this surgery are adopted with a valid spay/neuter voucher as part of the adoption contract.

Additionally, all dogs receive microchips implanted before their departure to their adoptive homes (for cats, this can be provided for a small fee). In the case of both dogs and cats, initial deworming and flea treatment is also provided during their stay in the shelter.

The SPCA of Western Quebec receives no government funding and relies solely on adoption fees and donations to cover all costs incurred in operating the shelter, and providing all of the necessities to our animals. As well, some animals may require a significantly expensive surgery or treatment in order to prepare him or her for adoption, typically due to a pre-existing condition, injury, etc. at the time the animal was admitted to the shelter.

Located in the Aylmer sector in the city of Gatineau, Quebec, just across the river from the nation's capital of Ottawa, Ontario, we accept animals into our shelter from the Ottawa/Gatineau area, as well as beyond. However, we have adopted animals to numerous regions of both Canada and the United States.

Additional adoption info

If there is an animal of particular interest to you, additional information can be acquired by contacting the SPCA by phone, e-mail or in person. The adoption fees for our animals do vary, depending on a variety of factors including but not limited to age, size, purebred, etc. as well as additional expenses incurred by the shelter for the animal, such as extensive dental work. An initial contact with the shelter can provide confirmation of the adoption fee for a particular animal.

We do request that potential adopters bring family members along to meet our anmals, as well as any pets they currently have, so that all are in agreement with the chosen dog or cat at the shelter. Our adoption process begins with a written questionnaire - also available online via our website - to aid in ensuring a perfect match with the animal you have selected. Following approval of the questionnaire by our adoption counsellors, an adoption contract is then completed and signed by all parties, and the full adoption fee is required at this time. Unless there is a requirement for the animal to remain at the shelter for an additional period - for surgery, for example - your new pet would be available to go home with you that same day.
