City Pitties

We are a small group of volunteers with big plans! We focus on services for companion animals and shelter pets, advocacy, and on occasion coordinate adoptions for pit bulls, pit bull mixes and other bully breeds only, on a case by case basis. We rehome stray and abandoned dogs but do not pull dogs from the city shelters (ie Animal Care & Control). We officially started in September 2008. We do what we do because we love and respect bully breeds and hope through the actions and words of City Pitties and partners, the Pit Bull can reclaim its extraordinary place in history as an exceptional family dog, "nanny dog", search and rescue dog, agility champ, assisted therapy dog, and even hero. We want the world to know, especially in states and counties with horrible breed laws and countries like Canada and throughout the EU which outright ban and forcefully seize privately owned pit bulls, that pit bulls make the best bomb and drug detection dogs and consistently score higher than any other type/breed in AKC temperment tests including "family friendly" labradors and golden retrievers. Pit bulls save lives and pit bulls love people!

Rescue FAQs

City Pitties is NOT a shelter. We do NOT take dogs in. We are a civic minded resource for pit bulls, pit bull mixes and other "bully breeds" in New York City, their “pet parents”, those looking to adopt from local shelters and rescues and those who just want to help. Our dogs don’t vote or pay taxes, but we do! We advocate for the American Pit Bull Terrier, pit bull mixes and other "bully breeds" through education, fighting Breed Specific Legislation ("BSL") and breed bans and encouraging responsible ownership and dog friendly community improvements. City Pitties provides a variety of services for pet parents, animal rescue groups, and animal wellness providers. We partner with approximately 20 animal rescue groups and shelters in the tri-state area (NY/NJ/CT), are affiliated with other rescue groups across the country and primarily serve Brooklyn, NY, but also Queens, Staten Island, the Bronx, Manhattan and parts of Long Island and Westchester County. We will work with you to rehome or better your relationship with your dog, but we will not take ownership of your pet.

Additional adoption info

For dogs listed on adoptapet.com, we require an application with reference, employment, landlord or homeowner's insurance agent, and home visit checks, current photo ID. We aim to complete the checks within one week. If the adoption is approved a contract must be signed and dated, and a non-refundable $200 donation made to City Pitties to cover general rescue expenses. We will consider a foster to permanent placement situation.
