Rescue FAQs

Started in 2006, Manitoba All Shepherd Rescue (formerly Manitoba German Shepherd Rescue) is a small group of volunteers dedicated to helping as many German Shepherds and German Shepherd crosses that have been abandoned, abused or neglected. Our goal is to find loving responsible forever homes for all of our dogs.
We currently conduct adoptions in Winnipeg, Manitoba and the surrounding area. Local adoptions are preferred, however out-of-town adoptions will be discussed on a case-by-case basis.

Additional adoption info

Because we most often get dogs where the history is unknown, all dogs are placed in foster homes for a period of time before being available for adoption. During this period of time we try to thoroughly evaluate the dog: health, inherent temperament and any behavior issues. We also offer them some very basic training: leash training, feeding etiquette and crate training.

If the dog has any behavior issues, we try to help him/her work through them. If the dog is shy, we can't change the genetic temperament but we CAN offer positive experiences to help overcome the shyness. If the dog is too boisterous, jumping up on everyone, we teach him/her a better way to greet people.

Most important, we offer the dog love and security with behavior guidelines. Once we feel confident in our evaluation of the dog while in a safe environment, the dog becomes available to be adopted to his/her forever home. Often dogs display unwanted behaviors because they have been in a shelter environment for too long, or they are coming from an abusive or neglectful home. Once they receive love and security and guidelines, the unwanted behaviors disappear!

We also try to match the available dog with the right home. All dogs are created equally, but not all dogs are created the same! Because German Shepherds are herding dogs, SOME have a very high chase instinct. These dogs do better in an environment without cats or small children to herd.

Once a dog is ready to be adopted, interested parties are able to fill out an application form. From there the application is reviewed, and a meet and greet is schedule to determine if the dog is a good fit within the home and with any other animals that may be there. If the potential adopter wishes to proceed, references are checked and a home visit it done. There is an adoption fee and a contract to be signed stating that the dog must come back to the rescue if, for any reason, the adopter can't keep the dog.
