Rescue FAQs

The Hopewell Humane Society (HHS) is a small, loving nonprofit that has been serving the Hopewell community since 1960. We focus on helping unwanted and abandoned animals feel safe, cared for, and ready for their forever homes. Our work is powered mainly by volunteers, along with a small, dedicated staff, and supported entirely by donations from people who care as much as we do.

Every animal with us is treated like family, and our spay/neuter efforts help reduce overpopulation and save lives each year. If you’re looking to adopt, volunteer, or support our mission, we’d be thrilled to welcome you. When you adopt from HHS, you don’t just give an animal a home, you give them hope.
The services and activities for the Hopewell Humane Society are mainly centered in central Virginia area, including, but not limited to, the Cities of Hopewell. Petersburg, Colonial Heights and the surrounding counties of Prince George, Chesterfield, Charles City, and Dinwiddie. Individuals as well as municipal animal control agencies from all of these areas often call upon
us for assistance in providing homes for animals and/or adopting animals being held.

Adoption steps

  1. Submit Application
    1. Submit an application; we review background which encompasses multiple views like housing, criminal, etc. This typically takes 24-48 hrs.
  2. Visit the Facility and Find a Pet
    1. Spend time with the cat to be sure it’s a comfortable, happy fit for both you and the cat.
  3. Approve Application
    1. If approved, you can take home same day or set up a date that works best for you.
  4. Take the Pet Home
    1. Payment & contract signature will be completed at the point of take home.

Additional adoption info

We talk to all prospective adopters. Anyone interested in adopting is asked to fill out an applicaiton information sheet. We check vet references, etc. If the prospective adopter is a renter, we verify that a pet is permitted. When approved, the adoption fee is $75-$180; an adoption contract is completed.

Prior to adoption all our animals are spayed or neutered. Each cat/kitten has been tested for FIV and FELV. All are treated for fleas, dewormed, and given rabies and distemper shot.
