Rescue FAQs

In 2005 members of the community of Portage recognized that although the City of Portage la Prairie and RM of Portage la Prairie offer animal control services there were no animals rescue organizations operating in the area. Members of the community started the Portage Animal Welfare Society to improve the quality of life of stray and abandoned companion animals in the City and RM of Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. P.A.W.S Inc is operated exclusively by volunteers, funded by donations and is managed by a board of directors. We are a no-kill animal rescue organisation rescuing animals from the local animal control agency (pound) and from the community at large. These animals are fostered until they are adopted by permanent homes. We do not have a shelter. We operate from a network of foster homes. Are organisation is also focused on education and cruelty prevention. Currently we operate with 15 foster care homes supporting both short and long term placements. Monthly adopt-a-thons are held at the Herman Prior Centre in Portage la Prairie. The personal experience of our executive director Tara Janeczko epitomize why our board of directors are dedicated to P.A.W.S Inc. In October of 2004 Tara’s peaceful and loving 15 year old Belgians Malinois Shepherd named Rusty was brutally mutilated and murdered in their own front yard, Rusty’s story is on our cruelty page. Tara was traumatized by what happened to their K-9 family member and was determined to help other animals in Rusty’s honour. Since the inception of P.A.W.S Inc We continue to evolve the organization to support our mission and the needs of the community.
P.A.W.S. Inc.’s mission is to improve the quality of life of stray and abandoned companion animals in the City and RM of Portage la Prairie, which includes areas such as Delta Beach, St Ambroise, Poplar Point, High Bluff, Oakville, Newton, Southport, Edwin and MacDonald. P.A.W.S. Inc. has extended this service to include areas such as Gladstone, Westbourne, MacGregor, Austin, Bagot, Rossendale, Lavenham and St Claude.

Additional adoption info

Step 1:  Adoption Application

If you would like to adopt an animal from the Portage Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), you must first complete an adoption application.  Copies of the application form are available by downloading the link below or by contacting the Society at
portageanimalwelfaresociety@hotmail.com or 204-857-PAWS.

Once you have completed the adoption application, we will proceed with a background
check.  The background check consists of:

(1) an interview with you, during which you will be asked to provide proof of identity; and
(2) veterinary reference checks, particularly if you have other animals at home and personal reference checks.

Step 3:  Adoption Contract and Fee

Upon successful completion of the background check, you will be asked to sign an adoption contract and pay the specified adoption fee.  In addition to the wonderful pet you have chosen, the fee includes the cost of veterinary care, de-worming, heartworm-testing (seasonal) and vaccines your pet received while in the care of the Society.  All animals adopted from PAWS are spayed or neutered and tattooed.

Adoption Fees (the fee also includes vaccinations and spay/neuter):

Cats

"Me and my Shadow" Take one cat home for $75 and his or her best friend can go live with you, too.
