The Vanderburgh Humane Society, Inc. (VHS), a tax exempt, 501(c)(3) organization, was founded in 1957. We receive no tax-based funding whatsoever. Therefore, we depend on the generosity of the corporate community and the public at large to continue, and hopefully expand, the much needed services we offer.

Shelter FAQs

We serve the city of Evansville, Indiana; Vanderburgh County, Indiana; and other areas of southwestern Indiana, southeastern Illinois, and northern Kentucky. VHS serves more than 12,000 animals each year from all counties through sheltering and our Low-Cost Spay/Neuter and Vaccine Clinics.

We welcome adopters, volunteers, foster parents, and donors from anywhere!

We run a Low-Cost Spay & Neuter Clinic out of the shelter which has completed more than 87,000 surgeries since it began in 2007. We also perform surgeries for adoptable pets in the care of 15 other agencies in 3 states. Additionally, we hold a Low-Cost Vaccine Clinic on Saturday mornings at the shelter for local families to get their pets vaccinated.

Our Clinic does not have residency requirements. Anyone who can make the drive to our facility is welcome from anywhere!

VHS Adoption hours are Tuesday-Saturday, 12:00-6:00 pm Central Standard Time.

Our adoption fees are as follows:

Cats & kittens: $100
Dogs older than 6 months: $200
Puppies under 6 months: $250
Rabbits: $50

Dog and cat adoption fees include the animal's spay or neuter, nationally-registered microchip, and age-appropriate vaccinations.
