The Ames Animal Shelter is a safe and humane place for the care of homeless, unwanted, lost, injured and many other animals, while owners are sought. At the Ames Animal Shelter we promise to love and care for the pets brought to us to the best of our abilities; we promise to make them as comfortable as possible in a difficult situation; we will work responsibly to maintain our 95%+ reclaim and adoption rate!

The Ames Animal Shelter provides pet adoption services to all areas.
Animal Control, owner surrender pet programs and other services are provided to residents of the City of Ames only.

Adoption steps
- Submit ApplicationApplicants do not need to commit to a particular animal, but may indicate particular ones of interest they see on our website.
- Approve ApplicationStaff will preapprove the application, then schedule the applicant for a meet & greet appointment with the animal(s) they are interested in.
- Meet the PetThe applicant may meet the animal(s) they are interested in and then make the decision on whether they would like to move forward to adopt.
- Sign Adoption ContractWhen the applicant decides to move forward with adoption, there is a short adoption agreement to sign.
- Pay FeeWe charge an adoption fee of $100 for cats and dogs, $40 for rabbits, and $10 for other small animal types.
- Take the Pet HomeMany times animals are able to go home the same day as their meet & greet appointment.

The Ames Animal Shelter's adoption process is all about ensuring the right match for the benefit of both the people and the animal. We use our application screening process to pre-approve applicants for general adoption. This gets all the boring paperwork stuff out of the way so when you come in to the shelter we can focus with you on finding the perfect furry friend match.
Our applications are not a simple pass/fail process, but instead are an opportunity for us to gather information on the needs of your family and the situation you'll be bringing an animal into.
