Shelter FAQs

We are an open admission animal shelter. We are averaging about 7,000 dogs and cats each year and another 200 of other type animals like rabbits, guinea pigs, horses, goats, chickens, etc. We want to save more and more animals so help by adopting our precious pets.
The Huntsville Animal Services Department serves Madison County, Alabama. We maintain an active volunteer program including fostering for dogs and cats. Animals are given vaccinations upon entering the program, are vetted and evaluated. The length of time an animal will remain in the shelter is dependent upon the population at the time. We also maintain a relationship with several animal rescue programs in the local area.

Additional adoption info

If you are interested in adopting an animal: 1) Write down the Animal ID # . 2) Make sure to mention Animal ID # when visiting or calling. 3) Remember all adoptions stop 30 minutes prior to closing time. 3) You will not be allowed to place a hold on the animal. 4) It cannot be shipped to you. 5) Before adopting it, you can spend time with the animal outside or in a "meet and greet" room. Please ask for assistance. 6) We take cash, checks, debit cards, VISA and Mastercard as a method of payment. **IMPORTANT: Huntsville Animal Services cannot guarantee that any animal will still be available for adoption as we do not hold animals for anyone under any circumstances. Animals are adopted on a first come, first serve basis. You may want to call and ask if one is still available prior to visiting the shelter. When you adopt a pet, it will stay at the shelter and be taken to the veterinarian of your choice where it will be spayed or neutered before going to its new home. If it is already spayed or neutered, it can go home with you upon adoption. My adoption cost is very affordable and includes my adoption fee, spay/neuter, vaccinations, deworming, license (if you live within Huntsville city limits), and microchip.
ADOPTION FEES
Cats seven months and older are currently $35 that includes spay or neuter surgery, rabies vaccination, microchip, city license tag if applicable, feline AIDS/LEUKEMIA test, and may also include other basic vaccinations when applicable. Kittens six months and younger are $50.

Dogs seven months and older are currently $35 and includes spay or neuter surgery, rabies vaccination, microchip, city license tag if applicable, canine heart worm test over six months of age, and may also include other basic vaccinations when applicable. Puppie six months and younger are $50. Prices are subject to change.

LICENSE FEES
$35 - Lifetime license not included in the adoption fee

Fees change if the animal comes into the shelter with proof of current rabies vaccination, current city license, and/or proof of spay/neuter. If the animal has been spayed or neutered there is no spay/neuter fee.
Adopting parties must have proof of identification. They must be 19 years of age or older. They must not be intoxicated. The adoption process takes approximately 30 minutes for the paperwork. Please allow ample time to look for the pet of your dreams, visit with it, and do all appropriate paperwork. We do not suggest adoptions for a gift. If you desire to give the gift of a new pet, bring that person with you and allow them to pick out their new family member.
