My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Our gentle giant, Daniel, is a dream come true for Mastiff or large breed enthusiasts. This easy going boy was found as a city stray in a rough inner city neighborhood, where he had been rambling solo for quite some time.

We first saw Daniel chained to a wall in the holding area of a large animal control facility. When he caught our eye, Daniel had the sad, gaunt look of a starved, homeless urchin, and we knew we wouldn't sleep that night if we didn't help him!

And so, Daniel went through the shelter process, and waited patiently while authorities made every attempt to locate his former owners. Only one year old, this majestic Bullmastiff had become a disposable ex-puppy, and a sadly familiar statistic.

Daniel has all the best qualities of the noble Bullmastiff. This mighty breed is the father of all designer breeds, and hails back to 19th century England, where the first attempts were made to cross the powerful Bulldog and Mastiff breeds to create a compact, muscular guard dog, devoted and loving to family.

Daniel is a large, strong dog, who is still a bit underweight at 67 pounds. When he was found, Daniel was extremely emaciated and showed signs of malnutrition. Now that he has begun to gain weight, Daniel has amazing presence, but is surprisingly easy to handle on lead. He is extremely loving and eager to please, so his handler has an easy time walking Daniel, and putting him through his obedience paces.

Daniel received outstanding behavior evaluations throughout his shelter process. Despite the accolades, Daniel wound up on the daily Euthanisa list. He came to us in one of the worst blizzards in recent memory, and as we pulled up to our 1/4 mile, ski slope driveway, we discovered that 4 wheel drive wasn't going to get us up that last stretch to the house. We unloaded Daniel and began our wintery ascent.

Daniel saw his foster Mom falter as she trudged up the slippery hill, and he instantly took the lead, like a sure footed mountain goat, and pulled her through the snow to safety. And then, he turned around and gave her his best, "Who saved who?" grin.

Daniel has adjusted to foster care beautifully. He is a social dog who loves affection and touch, but also can amuse himself if left alone. Daniel loves his toys and chew sticks, and has shown no signs of hogging the goods.

Daniel would do well with seasoned large breed dog folks who understand the responsibilities inherent in owning a powerful breed. Daniel's temperament is sweet and gentle, but adopters must realize that the breed has protective instincts that must be managed through effective obedience work. Daniel has already passed the first three Canine Good Citizen tests, and has shown potential to become an obedience star.

Daniel would do best in a single dog home, or perhaps, with one other docile well trained dog. He could join a family with older kids, or the active lifestyle of a single or couple, who can commit enough time to Daniel's exercise and training.

Daniel is in excellent health and is neutered. He has been vaccinated for rabies, parvo, distemper and bordatella. He is dewormed, and has tested negative for heartworm, Lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis.
