My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Our luscious Butterball is a force of nature. She reminds us of a canine Bette Midler, with her shock of red hair, and a big toothy grin! Butterball was found in the hallway of an abandoned building by concerned neighbors, who had spotted her in the area foraging for food. She is a friendly girl, who was easy to approach, so her Good Samaritans were able to snag her and bring her to the local Animal Control Shelter.

Unlucky Butterball was sportin' a bit of a limp when she was first vet examined, and she was immediately excluded from the adoption program, and fast tracked to euthanasia, despite excellent behavior evaluations. We discovered Butterball languishing on the kill list, just hours before her number was up, and we jumped at the chance to invite this rollicking beauty into our rescue.

Butterball immediately went into Isolation so that we could treat her mild kennel cough, and by the time she had finished her course of antibiotics, her limp had healed itself! A case of much ado about nothing! She is now dancing up a storm in the frosty pre-spring weather, and sometimes I think I hear under rhythms of "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy".

Butterball is a stunning beauty. Our shelter sources peg her as a Golden Retriever/Collie mix, and we second that guess. She is a medium, compact dog, weighing only 35 pounds, her ideal weight. Her coat favors her Golden Retriever roots in color and texture. She has a splash of white on her chest and a slight mane around her neck. Her tail is a pretty plume that she wags vigorously to express her joy to the world.

Butterball would be a joyous addition to any kind of active home. She is the rare Disney type of rescue dog who would thrill a family with kids, or, she could be the faithful activity partner for an energetic single or couple. She does well with other dogs, and while we have not had her with cats, she seems jovial enough to live with them in peace. Seasoned cat/dog folks should be able to troubleshoot any minor issues.

Butterball still has her puppy mojo, so adopters will need to have the time and patience to transition her to adulthood. Although Butterball has not shown destructive tendencies in foster care, adopters should be prepared to puppy proof the premises and crate her when left alone for at least the first month.

Butterball needs some polish on her house manners. She will jump up to give hugs and kisses, and while that might be fun at first, someday, she will leave muddy paw prints on somebody's favorite white linen slacks, and the fun will morph into annoyance. She is a smart girl, motivated by food and praise, so her training process should be easy and enjoyable.

Butterball is house trained and crate trained, but adopters should be prepared to fine tune good potty behavior as she adjusts to her new routine. She is in excellent health and has just been spayed. She is vaccinated for rabies, parvo, distemper, bordatella and canine influenza. She has been microchipped and de-wormed and is negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis.
