My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

It isn't everyday that a dog gets the honor of MAYOR'S DOG OF THE WEEK. Jewel was selected from the 400 or so canine population at the high-kill shelter in Houston to receive this Mayor's award. Jewel, at just 2.5 - 3 years old (such a perfect age..young enough to be energetic and have a long life ahead and old enough to understand adult skills) and 30 lbs, has the engaging personality and sweet, loving ways that attracts both humans and dogs to her. She's very popular at the shelter - the other pups treat her like a celebrity and all want to be her friend. She takes it all in stride.. maintaining her sweet, shy nature and getting a bit more attention just because she's so very pleasant. Jewel has now left the shelter and has been introduced to her Texas foster home while she waits for her transport to Denver. Jewel's foster mom had the following to say about this wonderful girl:
This little gal is really tugging at my heart...I may be in love! She seems to have been through a lot and possibly some type of abuse. She's very timid initially and after a few days.. cowers a bit but is gaining confidence. She'll just get low to the ground when I go to pet her as if waiting to be struck. Both my personal dogs did that when I first rescued them and now, 6 months later, they're both very confident with high self-esteem. It's a simple matter of them understanding you love them.
Jewel's temperament could absolutely not be sweeter! She also has the most beautiful eyes I've ever seen on a dog..filled with love and emotion yet pain behind it. She's so underweight as well. Of course, that's very temporary. She's getting the best food and treats and I can already see a slight difference. I'm not certain she's used to being a full-time indoor dog. When she first came to my home, the transporter had to carry her in (although I'm sure she was pretty overwhelmed with my 2 dogs..anyone would be!) She seems very comfortable outside so I'm carrying her inside for family time. When I set her down, she doesn't stray far from where she is. We also have doggie doors that allow Jewel a lot of outside time..that works well for her. At night, I carry her into our bedroom so she can sleep on a bed beside our bed. She did great, no accidents and was very quiet all night I carried her out of our room in the morning.. she just isn't ready to get up and follow me around yet. It's completely understandable..she barely knows me.
Jewel doesn't seem to have any aggression whatsoever, which is wonderful. I haven't heard her bark either but again...understandable as she's not ready to express herself yet. She certainly will with time. I want to be clear that whoever adopts Jewel is getting a gem! It just shouldn't be someone who insists on immediate gratification. She will be the most devoted companion around with patience, tons of love, training and the understanding that every great relationship takes a bit of time to blossom.
Farfel's is searching for an active retired couple or individual as a family for Jewel. We feel she'd enjoy the quieter environment and will bond with all her heart to those that spend lots of time. Jewel would be overjoyed with walking the beautiful Colorado trails and is the perfect size for hiking, snowshoeing or any dog-friendly activity. At day's end, she can wind down quickly and be a great couch companion...she'd love the belly rubs and positive attention that comes with being a best friend.
Jewel appears to be a non- shedding (or very lightly shedding) dog and will therefore require periodic baths/brushing and great nutrition to keep her golden coat healthy and as shed-free as possible. Jewel is not suggested for those with severe allergy concerns.
Jewel will be arriving on transport in Boulder on 12/12/14. Applications are currently being accepted for this sweet and devoted best friend and can be found at http://farfelsrescue.com/adoption/. If interested, please fill out and return to farfelsapps@gmail.com.
