My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

German Shepherd lovers will swoon at the elegant good looks of our magestic boy, Hans. Just one and a half years old, Hans found himself a homeless stray in a small town, scrounging for his daily meal for almost two months before Animal Control Officers were able to coax him to safety and shelter.

Hans has recently joined us, and we have enjoyed watching his outgoing personality unfold. He loves people, and is generally friendly to strangers. He would be the ideal K9 companion to an active single, couple, or family with older kids, who have large dog, or Shepherd experience. Powerful breeds like German Shepherds, that have a work ethic bred into their DNA, require active lifestyles that challenge their mental and physical faculties. They also need a strong leader to teach them Canine Good Citizenship.

Hans is typical German Shepherd, and has the classic brown and black short coat with saddle bag markings. He is petite for the breed standard, weighing just 60 pounds. He is a bit underweight, from his ramblin' days, and could easily carry another 10 pounds, gained through optimal nutrition, with omega fats added to his diet.

Hans exhibits the loyal, protective and extremely intelligent nature that is characteristic of the breed. During his initial few weeks at the town Shelter, Hans exhibited some reactivity to other dogs, while on leash, but we have found that switching him to a Herm Sprenger training collar, and working his basic obedience commands, has completely transformed him. He now heels nicely and pays close attention to his handler, looking for direction. Hans loves the training regimen, and can easily move forward, in the hands of motivated adopters, to earn his Canine Good Citizenship certification, and beyond.

Hans is in excellent health, has been neutered, and is structurally sound with no obvious hip problems. He is vaccinated for rabies, parvo, adrenovirus, distemper, coronavirus, leptspirosis, canine influenza, and bordatella. He has been dewormed, and has tested negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis.
