My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Our stunner DJ is not the dog for a novice dog owner. This beautiful and complex Basenji/Rat Terrier mix came to us a prime example of ineffective human leadership and neglect at work. He had landed in an overcrowded animal shelter, where, just five years old, he was abandoned by the owners who had failed him.

Some folks seem to get in over their heads when acquiring a new puppy, and despite good intentions, miss important social development cues. Add that to lack of leadership and exercise, and there you have the recipe for the average rescue dog. In DJ's case, he was labeled a miserable failure as a family dog, stuck in a chaotic household embroiled in a whirling derbish of activity, all of which left him confused and frustrated.

Our job in rescue has been to help DJ make a fresh start. We began by acknowleging his breed mix, which hardwires him as a high energy hunter. We channelled that vibe into exercise and obedience work to give DJ direction and an opportunity to shine instead of misbehave. His main gal, Madeline, even taught him to swim to spice up his exercise regimen, and, our Rx has worked! DJ has become a lovable boy, who has charmed us all. He has adapted well to the hectic rescue life, but it is clear that DJ would love to settle down with his special someone for the long haul. We think he would propose to Madeline if he could get up the nerve!

DJ would be the ideal companion for an active single or couple, who have some experience with energetic rescue dogs. He would be the ideal companion for an active Senior, with some rescue chops. He would do well in a simple home structure, either as an only dog, or with one other well trained dog. He is not a good fit for kids or cats.

The emotional payoff with DJ will be trust building and slowly earned victories, and the thrill of helping a spectacular rescue dog, so in need of an enlightened owner. We'd like to place him with someone whose lifestyle supports his needs, so that he gets enough exercise, leadership and playtime. He needs at least two brisk leash walks each day as well as the focused obedience work, that he loves.

We'd like to see DJ become a beloved companion dog, rather than an after thought in a complex family structure, in which nobody has time for him. He has alot to offer the right person, and will delight his adopter with playful hijinx as well as a beautiful singing voice. Yes, he has that characteristic Basenji Yodel.

DJ has great house manners and is housetrained and crate trained. Adopters should be patient and troubleshoot the occasional accident that he may have during his transition to a new routine. DJ is in excellent health, and has been vaccinated for rabies and DA2PP (distemper, adrenovirus, parvo and parainfluenza). He has had the 4dx test, and is negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis. He has been dewormed and microchipped.
