My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hi there! I'm Atticus. I'm a young guy, a little more than 2 years old. I'm a very loooooong dachshund, with unusual "wild boar"/ chocolatey coloring on my smooth coat, mixed with a little dapple. I need to put on a few pounds, because the people who had me before didn't feed me very well. Once I am at a healthy weight, I will probably be about 15 pounds. I tested heartworm negative, yay! I get along with other dogs, I'm actually quite submissive to them. I would not like to be the boss of a pack, but I do like other dogs. I really love squeaky toys and chasing a small tennis ball. I hope my new home will teach me to fetch! I enjoy snuggling my foster mom's feet under the covers, exploring the back yard, and sniffing things. I am pretty well house trained, especially if you use puppy pads (like my old home did). My foster mom is working with me on not needing those pads. I am a very sweet boy who enjoys quiet cuddling time on the couch. I'm a little timid right now, but every day I get a bit braver, and my foster mom said that only good things will happen for me from here on out.

My foster mom has not yet seen me with cats, so she can't report on that, but I do not chase the backyard chickens in my foster home, so I do not have a strong prey drive. I have been around kids 2-4 years old, and they scare me a little bit because I like things to be orderly and if they run, I will try to get them to be in their right place. But I have not been aggressive at all, I just like to herd them a bit. I also like things to be on a good routine. When it is bedtime, I will bark at foster mom to come to bed. Then I bark at foster dad until HE comes to bed too.

If you are interested in adopting Atticus, you can fill out an application right on our website! Go to dreamhappytails.org/adoptform.shtml. Atticus 's adoption fee is $375. All adoption fees go directly to veterinary care for DREAM dachshunds. Atticus will go to his/her new home microchipped, altered, heartworm tested, and up to date on vaccinations. Most dogs' veterinary expenses are greater than our adoption fees.

DREAM is an all-volunteer rescue group, and we focus on the Atlanta, North Georgia and Savannah area. Because we are all volunteers, we can consider applications only within an hour of these areas. DREAM does not recommend purebred dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a doxie's back.
