My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

MEET MAGGIE!

This giant, stunning girl is named Maggie! While Maggie's story may be a sad one, we'll only focus on it for a minute since she herself has already forgotten all about it and has been focusing on her future! Maggie is an ~8 year old Mastiff who was used for breeding in a puppy mill for her entire life. She was then purchased from the puppy mill and spent the next year of her life living outdoors before the Pennsylvania SPCA rescued her from the neglect. Shortly after arriving at their shelter, they reached out to City of Elderly Love to see if we could provide her a foster home where she could FINALLY experience what it was like to be a normal, loved companion animal. We were all too happy to help!

Maggie (or MagPie) has been with her loving foster family since the end of December. In just that short amount of time, she has transformed both physically and emotionally. To be honest, she's always had an award-winning personality so didn't need any help in that department! Because Maggie had never actually lived in a home and had some pretty severe muscle wasting from a poor diet and lack of exercise, she couldn't use stairs and was not housebroken. She is now strong, has gained an appropriate amount of weight (still has another 5-10 lbs. to go) and is completely housebroken! Maggie is one of the smartest dogs we've had the pleasure of rescuing. She enjoys spending time in her crate though doesn't actually require a crate while you're away from the house. Maggie also walks well on a leash despite her size. She also enjoys being bathed and doesn't mind when its time for ear cleaning or nail trims. While at first, she seemed a bit leery of men but that has since subsided since she's gotten to know her foster dad. She enjoys meeting new people on walks and while may take a little longer to warm up to new male friends, has no trouble doing just that! Her favorite spot in the house is laying at your feet (usually with her tongue hanging out!). She often lays her giant paws on her foster mom's feet and is never more than a few feet away from her human friends. This sweet girl has natural motherly instincts and holds no grudges though hasn't had the most glamorous life! She's just ready to make up for lost time.

Maggie is currently living with a Bloodhound who is about the same size as her and she loves to act as his "mother". You'll often find her grooming his face and ears and when he gets upset at a barking dog on a walk, she'll circle him to help him calm down (while she is unaffected by the other yappy dog). Maggie is also living with a cat and while is curious of her, isn't too interest in investigating her any further. Maggie needs to gain a few more lbs. to fill out, but will do just that with a continued healthy diet. She has been treated for lymes disease and other diagnostics show that she is a healthy girl! Maggie would likely do best in a low-key home to match her low-key personality. A home where she can be doted on, loved, and cherished just for being her would be her dream! Could Maggie be your girl?

Maggie is available for adoption through City of Elderly Love. She is vaccinated, microchipped and will be spayed prior to going to her forever home. She is also heartworm negative.
