Kallan – “Flowing Water”

Here is Kallan’s story and how she earned this very unique name.

Kallan and her week old puppies were saved from the pound the day before they were ALL scheduled to be euthanized. She was scared, tired, and stressed. The pound said that she would not approach any of the staff and they suspected that if someone approached her she would bite. This could not have been farther from the truth. Yes, she was scared but as we put a leash on her and walked her out of the pound she showed no aggression at all. She has never shown any aggression towards dogs or people and for a new momma with week old puppies that is really good.

When we brought her home she spent the first night in our spare bathroom using our tub as a bed with her 4 rolley polley puppies. The introductions with our two dogs and our cat went well and we were all settling in to having her in our home. She spent most of her time in the tub with her puppies, feeding them and being a good momma. She would tell me she needed outside by scratching at the door. Everything was going perfectly…UNTILL, the second night.

That night she did not wake me up, I awoke at 7 am walked down the hallway and discovered WATER everywhere. I opened the bathroom door imagining the worst… had she turned the shower on? Were the puppies OK? Where is all this water coming from? She was sitting in the tub looking very innocent. The puppies were dry and safe but the sink was on. In the middle of the night she had gotten on the counter turned the sink on and plugged the drain with the stopper. It has been running for a few hours at least. We estimate that there was ~20 gallons of water spread down the hall and in an extra bedroom. Luckily everyone was safe, which was our main concern. My husband said that she needed a name to commemorate her little adventure, that is how we arrived at Kallan, which means flowing water.

Since then Kallan has integrated into our pack. She follows our Doberman around everywhere and she is a great dog. We think she is 3 years old. She gets along with cats too. She is a little shy of people so she would do best in a home with another dog. She would even be good with a dominant male because she is very submissive. She likes to chew on rawhides and toys. She is learning manners like not to surf the counter and how to sit before she eats. She is going to make a great dog for someone looking for a laid back companion.
