Shelter FAQs

The Downriver Central Animal Control Agency (DCACA) is a collaborative effort among Southgate, Wyandotte, Allen Park. All cities adopted uniform animal control ordinances and combined jurisdictions in April 2013. These three cities are currently the only ones we serve.

The DCACA has two facilities, one in Southgate and one in Wyandotte. The Southgate facility, called Downriver Central Animal Control (DCAC), serves as the intake facility. It handles all animal intakes (stray or surrender), wildlife traps (very limited), animal complaints, and reports of lost/found pets. The Wyandotte facility, called Wyandotte Adoption Center (WAC), serves as our premiere adoption facility. Adoptable animals from the intake facility are transferred to WAC once space becomes available. All animal adoptions are handled by their facility. Please visit www.wacshelter.com to view our adoption animals. WAC cannot help you with any animal control matters other than adoptions!

DCAC/WAC are both rescue friendly!

OFFICE HOURS for the SOUTHGATE FACILITY:
Monday - Friday: 10am - 11am and again from 3pm - 4pm

HOURS for ADOPTIONS at WYANDOTTE'S FACILITY:

Tuesday: 5:30pm - 7:30pm
Friday: 5:30pm - 7:30pm

Please note: We try our best to ensure that all animals at the intake facility are viewable online. However, if you are missing your pet, you are encouraged to come into the Southgate facility to see if it is here. All animals that are on stray hold are only at the Southgate facility.

Additional adoption info

If you are interested in adopting, please fill out an application online (use intake number and/or name if one is given) at www.wacshelter.com. The adoption facility is located at 1170 Grove St. in Wyandotte. All dogs and cats (including puppies and kittens) will be spayed/neutered, brought up-to-date on shots, and heartworm tested (dogs) or combo tested (cats) prior to adoption. Therefore, do not worry if a dog or cat is not listed as fixed, they will be before you bring them home.

Please note that we accept applications for all dogs/cats on stray hold. However, this is only to speed up the adoption process in an effort to keep animals moving through the shelter at a steadier pace. They will not be adopted out before their legally mandated stray hold period ends. Also note that Downriver Central Animal Control (Southgate facility) is for intakes only. Our main adoption center (Wyandotte Adoption Center) handles adoptions. Both DCAC/WAC are rescue friendly!
