Sparky was on his second stay at the same conventional shelter. He was endangered there, because of his age and a severe skin issue. He was a staff favorite there, however, and spent his days hanging out in an administrator's office. She networked him hard, and we pulled him last summer. Since his arrival at Safe Shelter, his skin issue has been successfully treated and he is currently on zero meds. He's had some other medical issues and two surgeries: removal of some cancerous lumps on his skin, and a spleenectomy. Through it all, Sparky has remained calm and pleasant, patiently waiting for his forever home. He wants to hang out with his people, and he has good energy for his age, enjoying a leash-walk or romp in the yard. Housetrained and fully vetted. 240 522 7416 for any questions.

Potential adopters physically meet the animal, and me. The person or couple is interviewed in person, a vet reference is checked (if possible), and I visit the home, tour inside and outside, ask any additional questions necessary, meet any live-in family members yet unmet, and sleep on my final decision. The next day I will call with a decision - either way. The adoption fee for a dog is $100, for a cat, $40. The adoption contract includes a takeback policy - in effect for the entire life of the animal- and the right to visit, with notice, and to raclaim the animal in the case of neglect or abuse.

Go meet their pets
I generally will bring a cat to the person for a meet-and-greet. Dog applicants come here, to the rescue, to meet.

More about this shelter
Safe Shelter has been up and running for 22 years. I worked for a year at a large, long-running, widely respected no-kill shelter and this inspired me to try it myself. It is a small, low-budget operation that could really use some volunteer and foster help!
