My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Buster! What an amazing dog who unfortunately was living a life on a chain. He's happy to be warm and safe now, but dreaming of new, wonderful forever family.
Buster loves EVERYONE! He's a big goofy boy who doesn't realize his size, but what a lovable, happy dog! With a training collar on, he walks very well on a leash. He loves treats and is ready to please. He loves to run and play and will make a wonderful companion to an active family---or someone with a secure fenced yard where he can exercise himself. Buster was left alone on a tie-out before, so we are asking that he be with a family who will let him live indoors and truly be part of the family.
Buster has been tested with dogs and cats, and is happy with both. Of course, he might chase a kitty if it runs, but he can easily learn to be polite. He would love an active playmate dog to bond with...a meet and greet is always good to ensure a win-win for all. (The key to a happy home of pets are slow introductions over the course of a few days...step by step.)
Don't miss out on this handsome, sweet boy!

We do ADOPTIONS BY APPOINTMENT ONLY, on a first-come/first serve basis. The best way to make an appointment is to click the blue "Book Now" button at the top of our Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/maccoanimalcontrol. Since we do first-come, first-serve adoptions, we highly recommend making an appointment asap if you want this pet. PLEASE WRITE THIS PET’S NAME in the note section of the appointment form, so we know who you want to see. In many cases, you can take the pet home the same day, so come prepared. :-) No need to email us prior to making an appointment, unless you have a specific question. If you have trouble with online booking, please email us. Appointments are available:
Mon., Wed, Thurs.~ 10am-2:30pm
Fri. & Sat.~ 8:30-Noon
***NOTE: Adoption fee includes spay/neuter, microchip and vaccines; all required before adoptions are finalized. CASH OR CHECK ONLY.
If you RENT, we need written confirmation from your landlord that you can have a pet.
We are a rural animal control with limited resources and depend on both local and out-of-county folks to adopt our pets. We appreciate you looking!

Visit the Facility and Find a Pet

Most cats roam free in cat rooms. Dogs are in pens, but we are happy to get them out for a meet and greet with you and your other pets

2.

Submit Application

In most cases, applications are reviewed immediately.

3.

Sign Adoption Contract

If your application is approved immediately, you can fill out the adoption contract right away.

4.

Pay Fee

Adoption fees are $100 for cats, and $175-220 for dogs. Includes spay/neuter, vaccinations and microchip! $12 for tag if Macoupin resident.

5.

Take the Pet Home

If dogs/cats are spayed/neutered, they can go home with you same day. If not, arrangements will be made.

Additional adoption info

Our stray animals are held 10 days to see if the owner will claim them. If no one claims the animal, the animal is put up for adoption. We also accept owner surrendered animals (for a fee) if space allows. Also...Due to Illinois state law, no animals can be adopted without being fixed first. So, if the pet you select is spayed/neutered, you can take it home right away. If not, adoption will be finalized after our next spay/neuter clinic.

More about this shelter

We are a rural county animal control facility, located about 1 hour from both St. Louis, MO and Springfield, IL. Unfortunately, we are almost always at full capacity---meaning 30+ dogs and even more cats. With less than 46,000 people in our entire county, we welcome out-of-town adopters.

We also welcome relationships with rescues who are willing to take transfers. We need you!
