My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Speedy has a pretty sad story. He came into rescue because his owner passed away. When the people went to take Speedy out of the house, they found the conditions that he was living in were deplorable. The floor was falling in, there was garbage and junk everywhere and Speedy was terrified. They thought that he had probably ever only known his dad. He was a little growly and was fear biting. Sudden movements terrified him. Speedy was finally removed from the home and was found to be covered in huge fleas and he barely had any hair. His skin is tough and appears to be similar to other dogs we have seen with severe skin issues possibly resulting in infection from constant scratching. The fleas were removed by a temporary foster and his coat has started to come back. We may still do antibiotics for the skin, depending on vet's advice. He has to go back to get a full exam as he was only able to get a cursory pre-surgical exam when we took him for his neuter on 5/3/23. Speedy surprisingly tested negative for heartworms and on his fecal exam. He does have bowed out front legs that may be from a poor diet as we were told that his owner had only fed him hotdogs and bologna, which is not the best diet for a dog to be on. We will ask the vet if his legs may recover once on a better food source but it doesn't really affect him walking or seem to give him any issues that would be problematic for an adopter. We were told that Speedy is about 4 years old but have no way to verify. He does not seem very old but definitely was the victim of some neglect in his life.
He weighed 9.6 pounds as of 5/3/23
His temporary foster stated that he was not crate or housetrained when she got him and he would use the bathroom in his crate. However, she was able to get him to start going outside utilizing her personal dog as a teaching guide. He seems to be crate trained now but we never guarantee crate or housebroken and given his trauma, he may have accidents as he settles into his new life and sees that he is safe in his new home. Speedy, although initially timid and scared, has a really sweet personality and his temporary foster said that he does love to cuddle. He also seems to like other dogs and gravitated to them to learn what to do and what is expected of him. We do not recommend Speedy for small children due to the possibility of fear biting and being scared of sudden movements. Older children who can respect the dog's space should be fine. We think Speedy would do fine with cats also although we do not know if he has any experience with cats. He just seems like a dog who would not have the desire to chase or harm them. We feel that Speedy will make a wonderful companion and will be forever thankful for someone giving him his second chance at a wonderful life!
