Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Urgent Plea for a Foster Home for Mindy
Mindy, a sweet and gentle 9-year-old Lab and Hound mix, desperately needs a safe place to land. Her previous family failed her, and she was abandoned, but she still has so much love left to give.
A senior dog might not run a marathon alongside you, but she will happily walk by your side. The slower, gentler pace of life settles into their old bones, making every moment shared with them special. Like fine wine, dogs get better with age—their muzzles may be whiter, but their hearts are fuller.
Mindy is a 55lb, loving senior girl who enjoys spending time outside, taking walks, and playing with toys. She still has more energy than a typical senior and thrives on attention, treats, and bones. She does well in playgroups with proper introductions and is currently kenneled with other dogs at the shelter. She is crate trained but, like many senior dogs, needs a consistent routine to manage her bladder. She also walks best with a harness.
Mindy’s Story:
Mindy came from Texas, where humans failed her, leaving her to face an uncertain fate in a shelter. She is still adjusting and needs a gentle hand to help her rebuild her trust. She is also vocal when meeting new dogs, so proper introductions are essential to help her feel confident.
Her Situation is Extremely Urgent!
Mindy is finishing up her final 10 days of rest from heartworm treatment and will be ready for adoption soon. However, her current foster family is in crisis and can no longer care for her. She must be relocated immediately.
We do not have a physical shelter, and our boarding partners are completely full for the next few weeks due to Spring Break. More than that, we are deeply concerned that placing her in boarding will break her spirit.
Mindy deserves a warm bed and the comfort of a home in her senior years. We are desperate to find her a foster or forever family right now.
Can You Help?
While you foster, we provide all necessary supplies and vet care through our local veterinary partners. You provide the love.
If you can help by fostering or adopting Mindy, please email us as soon as possible at: adopt@safehavendogsil.org
Please help us help her! Mindy deserves a second chance at love and security. Time is of the essence—she needs you now!

More about this rescue
We are a small 501 C3 nonprofit rescue located in Elburn, Illinois. In 2014, Safe Haven Dog Rescue became its own non-profit. We are licensed by the Illinois Agriculture Department.
The majority of our dogs and puppies are pulled from Kill Pounds and Shelters in Tennessee, Arkansas, Texas, and Illinois. We also accept local medical cases as often as our finances will allow.
Please take a few moments to read the stories about the dogs and puppies we have available for adoption. We disclose everything we know about the dogs, sometimes we know a lot often we know only that they were strays, thrown away on the side of the road, in the woods, or found in abandoned houses.
While we don’t always know their past we are certain that their future is much brighter.
We hope that you and your family are part of the future…..
