My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

This quirky cutie can’t wait to be your little shadow!

Hi friends! I’m Kiwi — your perfectly imperfect little shadow. I’m a 2.5-year-old, 10-pound Spaniel mix with a quirky spirit, a big heart, and my own way of doing things. You see, I’m more of a “love you from a distance” kind of gal. Think cat… but cuter (if I do say so myself). I love being close, near, and around my person — I just prefer to show my love without touching.

Life hasn’t been the easiest for me. I came from a shelter in San Bernardino after I was hit by a car. I had tire marks on my body when a Good Samaritan found me, and at the time, I couldn’t see anything. I got lucky — I was rushed to a neurologist, and they discovered I likely had a small brain bleed from the trauma, causing my vision loss. It was a long, confusing recovery but little by little my vision came back.

It’s been a journey, and though the world still feels a little scary sometimes, I’m so happy to be here! I’m uncomfortable with touch, but I have my own special ways of showing love. I’ll zoom around the house in the mornings when I see my favorite people, skidding out on the hardwood floor like a goofball.

I’m VERY dog-friendly and love having other pups around. I’d do great with other small dogs in the home — they help me feel confident and happy. I’m also cat-friendly and do well with kids, though I’ll likely keep my distance and do my own thing.

I’m crate trained and love my little safe space. I’m still working on bathroom training, but I do great when you’re diligent about taking me outside. I’m not leash trained because of my touch sensitivities, so I’ll need a secure backyard to roam and sunbathe — that’s my happy place!

I know I’m not the conventional choice — I’m not going to jump into your arms and ride off into the sunset on day one. But if you’re patient, gentle, and willing to meet me where I’m at, I’ll show you my love in my own quirky, special way!

If you have a calm, respectful home, maybe some small dog friends, and a heart that appreciates the magic of small steps forward, I just might be your girl. I’m not perfect, but I’m perfectly Kiwi — and I can’t wait to spend my life with you!

My adoption fee is $300 and that includes spaying/neutering, shots, and microchip. If you want to take me home, please fill out the form on the website here: https://theanimalpad.org/adoption-application/

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

We prioritize local San Diego applicants. We do not provide transport of dogs to other states, and don't allow the dogs to fly in the cargo of the plane.
Our adoption process from start to finish, involves 3 standard forms, and 2 situational.
All potential applicants must be capable of providing their adopted pet with routine and emergency veterinary care (yearly health checks, keeping vaccinations current, heartworm/flea preventatives, and immediate care in the event the animal is sick or injured). They are required to license their pet, and keep an identification tag on their pet at all times.
All applicants must agree to a home check, and provide us with a veterinary reference, or personal references if you're a first-time pet owner. Our home checks are not to invade the privacy of the applicants, we do this to ensure the pet is going into a safe home. We do not discriminate against non-homeowners, or those living in apartments, condos, or otherwise.
Our adoption fees vary from $150-1000.
Applicants must agree in writing that if for any reason they are unable to keep or care for their pet, the pet will be surrendered back to our rescue and not re-homed, turned over to a shelter, pound, rescue, new owner, sold, etc.

More about this rescue

Overview
The Animal Pad is a nonprofit, all-breed dog rescue devoted to saving the lives of dogs facing euthanasia at high kill animal shelters and off the streets of Mexico. We rescue, rehabilitate, and re-home locally.

We are dedicated to animal advocacy, and educating dog owners on the importance of spaying and neutering their pets. We are a foster based rescue, and rely heavily on the kindness and generosity of the amazing people who make donations toward the rescue and care of the dogs we save.

We are always looking for adopters, fosters, donations, volunteers, etc.. Please let us know if you would like to get involved by contacting us at one of the email addresses found below.
