My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

LOCATION: San Antonio, TX
DOB: 04/15/2023

Meet Laverne, a beautiful pibald Great Dane with a tender heart, a gentle spirit, and a personality that’s blooming more every day. When she first arrived in rescue, she was completely shut down. Now, she has begun to trust, bond, and even show her goofy side — and watching her transformation has been nothing short of rewarding.

Laverne is generally a calm girl who enjoys a peaceful home and a predictable routine. She’s happy with a short daily walk and some quiet time in the backyard, which is plenty of activity for her. What she loves most is being close to her person. She follows her foster everywhere, paws gently at them when she wants more affection, and melts into snuggles like she’s been waiting for them her whole life. When she’s excited — usually at mealtime or when her foster comes home — she does a little dance that is impossible not to smile at. She also adores car rides and settles in happily for the trip.

Because she’s becoming more confident, Laverne has recently started showing signs of jealousy and resource guarding, especially when it comes to her toys, her food, and her person. She’s very sensitive and gets her feelings hurt when she’s corrected, often retreating to her room to pout. She’s lived with other dogs — large males and females — and done well with some of them, especially calm, respectful males who give her space. She can struggle with certain dogs, particularly those who are pushy or overly energetic, so a home with a well-matched larger male or a home where she’s the only dog would be the safest fit. Cats are unknown.

Laverne walks well on leash sometimes but can be inconsistent, especially in new places. She is fully housetrained, does well in a crate or her own room, and is not destructive. She prefers a slower pace when meeting new people or trying new things. She’s selective about men but has never had issues with women, and she does best in a calm home with older teens or adults. Patience, gentle handling, and a quiet environment help her feel secure and confident.

Medically, Laverne has a history of severe bilateral cherry eye that required surgery, with a minor complication afterward that has since resolved. She also has an arthritic hind ankle — likely from an old injury — that can cause discomfort if she overdoes it, but it stays well managed with a joint supplement. She has an enlarged esophagus (not megaesophagus), which occasionally causes burping or, rarely, vomiting. Her foster manages this with omeprazole when needed.

Laverne has made incredible progress but still has more growing to do. She thrives with people who move at her pace, speak softly, and give her time to feel safe. She loves treats, loves hugs, and loves being part of a quiet home where she can relax and continue learning that the world isn’t as scary as she once believed.

She would do best with a mature, patient adopter or couple who can spend plenty of time with her, offer slow introductions to new experiences, and let her blossom on her own terms. With the right family, Laverne will be a deeply loyal, affectionate companion who finally gets the peace and love she’s been searching for.

More about this rescue

To rescue Great Danes from neglect, abuse, and abandonment while providing medical care and individual rehabilitation through our experienced and loving foster home program until we are able to provide each rescued Dane with a qualified, caring, and permanent home that will ensure a good quality of life they deserve.

To assist owners that cannot afford spaying, neutering or heartworm treatment as funds allow while also educating owners on affordable, local spay/neuter clinics, spay/neuter benefits, vaccinations, backyard breeding, behavior, nutrition, and obedience. Additionally, we want to be a link point to other rescues and clubs. Raising awareness around rescues and the Great Dane breed is of great importance to us.

We have been rescuing Great Danes since 2011 and we take pride in the collective love, concern, and dedication we have given to the misunderstood and forgotten Danes. It is our mission to continue to be the voices of the less fortunate Danes and to provide them safety and their birthright to a quality of life filled with love and dignity. You can help us achieve our mission by donating funds, items from our wishlist, items of relevance, your time through volunteering, or by lending your home as a foster.
