Little Alto is a 2 year old Mixed breed who came into our care as a Stray after being picked up by Pass Christian Animal Control. He came to us in rough conditions, and it was assumed he had been hit by a car before he was found. He had minor injuries to his face, eyes, and skin but is healing wonderfully under the care of our Veterinary team. Despite his condition when he came to us he is always happy to be greeted by new people and dogs. But he is very unique in one way...Alto is DEAF. Deaf dogs are just as capable of loving you as a hearing one, they just rely more on sight and smell. They can be highly trainable by using hand signals or teaching them basic sign language. To get their attention it is best to stomp your foot to create vibrations, or flash lights. Leash safety is very important as they can not hear the outside environment around them on walks. They rely on their handlers, or other dogs in a household to guide them. Alto has so much potential to give to a new home. If you are interested in adopting Alto please come meet him in person. We also recommend doing some research on how to care for a deaf dog before adoption. He is heartworm negative, and will be neutered upon adoption. Come meet this sweet boy today!

Our adoptable animals page is self-updating and displays ALL of HSSM’s adorable adoptable pets from “pocket pets” to birds and of course the hundreds of dogs and cats currently calling HSSM home! See one you like? Make sure you note your favorite’s name and animal ID number so that HSSM staff and volunteers can easily find him/her when you come in!
Adoptions are cut off every day about 30 minutes prior to closing and possibly earlier if volume is high. Weekends are busy and you may have to wait more than an hour (especially in the afternoons) so please be prepared.
