My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Black Betty, the resilient heart-stealer who is ready to embark on a journey from rags to riches! 🌟 At just 3 years old and about 50 bs, this stunning mixed breed beauty has a backstory that will tug at your heartstrings. For far too long, she roamed the streets, a ghost of her former self, with sad eyes that told tales of longing and missed chances. 🌳 Some say she lived on the corner of N Kulani for two years, waiting in vain for her owner, while others believe she was left behind, a casualty of circumstance. But no more! After being rescued from the jungle where she spent her days hoping for a better life, she’s now learning what it means to truly be loved. 🐾

Betty has received an OSS (Ovary Sparing Spay). Please note: dog will have a heat cycle still but not bleed due to her uterus being removed. This allows for the dog to still have all the wonderful health benefits of having hormones without getting pregnant. Heat smell can be mitigated by giving the dog chlorophyll during her cycles so as to not attract male dogs. More info on hormone sparing sterilizations available on our website www.bigislanddogs.org.

Once skittish and elusive, Black Betty has blossomed into a joyful pup! She is still a bit shy at first, especially with men. She's already potty trained, suggesting she once enjoyed the comforts of home. She no longer sleeps alone in the rain, cold and wet. Now, she snuggles in her warm bed, getting all the kisses and cuddles she missed. 💖 While she is still working on her basic commands and is not yet spayed, she is a quick learner, and with a little patience, she will thrive!

Good news for dog lovers: Black Betty gets along with other pups! However, potential adopters should know that her forever family will need to be thoroughly vetted, ensuring that this sweet girl never faces hardship again.

Are you ready to be the hero in Black Betty’s story? She’s not quite ready for adoption yet, but she’s on her way, and the love you give her will be met with endless loyalty and joy! Let’s make her next chapter the best one yet!

More about this rescue

Big Island Dogs Rehoming and Resources Inc. is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based on Hawaiʻi Island. We are a dedicated dog rescue charity committed to giving every dog the second chance they deserve. We rescue abandoned, neglected, and abused dogs, providing them with essential medical care, safe shelter, and the unconditional love they’ve been missing, as well as assist the community in various needs such as rehoming, transportation to clinics and education.

We are holistically minded, believing that a dog’s well-being goes far beyond basic care. Our approach supports the whole animal....body, mind, and spirit, so every dog has the opportunity to heal fully and thrive.

In addition to rescue and rehabilitation, we provide education and resources to help people support their dogs in living healthier, happier lives. From guidance on nutrition and natural wellness to tools that promote a robust immune system, we empower owners with knowledge that can make a lifelong difference.

Through fostering, adoption, outreach, and community programs, we strive to build a world where every dog is cared for compassionately and holistically. Every donation, volunteer effort, and act of kindness helps transform a dog’s life and strengthens the human-animal bond along the way.
