My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Daffodil is a former broodmare who narrowly escaped a bad situation where her former owner locked her and her herdmates into a small barn after they got out and animal control showed up. The entire herd then lived in the barn 24/7 and did not have access to fresh air or adequate nutrition.

When animal control visited again, the owner decided to quickly relinquish ownership before facing charges and the horses were all sent to several different locations.

By the time Daffodil arrived with her current owner, she was traumatized and mistrustful. Luckily, she landed in the temporary care of someone who addressed her medical needs, including a pregnancy check, immediately and has been working on meeting her emotional needs to sooth her “quirky” personality for the past couple months.

It has been reported that Daffodil is responding well to her daily handling while learning that humans can be dependable.

At her initial vet evaluation, it was determined that Daffodil does have a grade 4 heart murmur, and so she is being rehomed as a hospice-type, companion only horse. She is still skinny from her ordeal, and her owner is working to refeed her. Her vet believes that with adequate nutrition and a less stressful living environment, Daffodil has a relatively good prognosis despite her heart murmur to experience a higher quality of life.

Although Daffodil is making improvement, she still has a long way to go. Her current owner does not foresee having access to enough resources to give her a forever home, and needs to find an experienced horse owner who can continue her rehabilitation.

To help cover some of the cost of Daffodil’s care, Dominion Equine Welfare Society is helping her owner with financial assistance from their EquiHelp program. If you would like to donate to help with Daffodil’s care until she can be placed in her forever home, please visit www.dominionequinewelfare.org/donate
