Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Meet Hilo (Heelo)! Age: ~13 years Weight: ~29 lbs Breed: Chihuahua / Beagle mix
Please read the bio in full for answers to your questions. In the event you have a question that is not covered in the bio, please email info@seniordoghaven.org. If interested in adopting, please complete an adoption application which can be found at https://seniordoghaven.org/adoption-process/. Please note that because all our dogs live in foster homes, we are unable to set up meetings with a dog unless we have a completed adoption application on file. Adoptions must be within a reasonable distance from Wilmington, Delaware for our volunteers to be able to conduct an in-person home visit.
Hilo is a lovable senior gentleman looking for a forever home to enjoy his golden years. He is fully housebroken, healthy, and has a wonderful, easygoing personality that makes him a joy to have around.
Hilo is a medium-energy pup who absolutely loves his walks — so much so that he does adorable little hops with his front paws when it’s time to go out. He also enjoys car rides, treats, toys, and being close to his people. He’s happy to nap independently but also enjoys attention and companionship.
This sweet boy gets along great with dogs, cats, and older children. He barks minimally, walks nicely on a leash, doesn’t mind being handled or picked up, and sleeps comfortably in a dog bed. While he’s not crate trained, he does very well in the home. He can do stairs and is still gaining confidence with them. A fenced yard is not required as long as he gets regular walks.
Hilo has had a mass removed and a few dental extractions and is currently on monthly preventatives. He has no ongoing medical or behavioral issues — just a little extra weight he’s happily working off with his newfound love of walks.
One of Hilo’s cutest quirks? He recently discovered the toy basket and will bury his entire head inside to pull out every toy, one by one. He’s silly, sweet, and loves being your little shadow.
Ideal Home: A loving home where someone is around often and enjoys having a calm, affectionate companion nearby. Hilo truly thrives with people around and would love a home full of love and routine.
If you’re looking for a gentle, loyal senior who still has plenty of joy for life, Hilo is ready to meet you!

The goal of Senior Dog Haven & Hospice is to find the best home possible for our senior dogs. To assist us in this endeavor, SDH&H requires a fully completed application, references, and a visit to your home by one of our trained volunteers. For this reason we only process applications within a reasonable commute from the dog's foster home.
Our adoption fee is $200, however we offer a discounted rate of $150 for senior adopters over the age of 65.

More about this rescue
We are a small, dedicated group of fosters and volunteers. We strive to improve the lives of senior dogs who find themselves without a family to care for them anymore. We do not have a facility. Our dogs live in our homes as members of our families. We provide care, comfort, companionship and, most of all, unconditional love. We have worked in senior rescue for years, and see the continuing and growing need to get them out of shelters where they are often euthanized because of their age and/or medical reasons, or from owners that find themselves in crisis and no longer able to care for their companions (nursing home, illness, abusive situations, etc).
Senior Dog Haven and Hospice is a registered 501(c)3. All donations to our rescue are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law.
