My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Stitch has been living in a foster home but is onsite this week starting 3/5 hoping to meet you! Please submit an application from our website or just come in during open hours.

We've never seen a dog quite like Stitch, with an amazing combination of dignified stateliness and adorable, freckled enthusiasm! Plus a pair of the most beautiful moss-green eyes we have ever seen!

Unfortunately Stitch's original family was unable to care for him after facing financial challenges, so he was surrendered to Chicago Animal Care and Control back in December. Some Heartland staff met him there and saw how well he played with other dogs, and he melted right in to our hugs, so of course he came back with us.

At about 1.5 years old, he is the perfect age for both adventures and snuggle sessions. Stitch is a large, exuberant boy who knows basic commands. He'd do best in an active family who is willing to give him lots of positive reinforcement and consistent training to keep him healthy and nurture the distinguished gentleman in him!

Stitch was actually adopted a couple of weeks after arriving at Heartland, in early January. A young couple adopted Stitch and one of Stitch's shelter buddies, a then-4 month old puppy named Moose! They had the best intentions of building their little family but they have realized that taking on two dogs at once is not sustainable long term, and so they have decided to re-home Stitch. It is heartbreaking that Stitch is losing another home through no fault of his own, but we always want what is best for the dog in the long term, and his adopters were able to continue fostering him until recently, due to moving out of the state.

Because Stitch had been in a home for several weeks, we know a lot more about him than we did before, and we hope this information will help him find the best match. Stitch is housebroken, and while he doesn't love his crate, he will go in there and do ok or he can be left to free roam so far for up to two hours without issue (they have not tried it for longer!). Stitch lives with another dog, and as you can see from all of his videos from his time at our shelter, is very dog social!

Stitch sees his role in the home as the protector and may let out intimidating "boofs" to any passersby, but he is actually a very loving and shy baby. He may be initially hesitant to meet new people who come into his home, but in a short time and with treats he will accept anyone who his person accepts. He is very "tuned in" to his people and he really looks to his handler for guidance and will take his cues from you. So... if someone you *don't* like shows up, Stitch has got your back!

His fosters write, "Stitch is a sweet, loyal, and affectionate dog who bonds deeply with his people. Stitch is playful, curious, and loves enrichment activities that keep his mind busy. He has lived successfully with another dog and enjoys canine companionship. While he can be alert to his surroundings, he responds well to calm handling and seems eager to learn and to continue training. Stitch just needs a loving home that can provide consistency and lots of affection, which is what any dog deserves. He is such a good boy."

If you’re looking for a loyal, enthusiastic partner, please ask about our speckled friend Stitch today!

Stitch’s adoption fee is $300. This animal is neutered, up to date on core vaccines, and Heartworm negative.
