This handsome 6-year-old boy arrived at our facility in Newark after his owner sadly passed away. While it’s been a big adjustment, Cucumber has handled the change with quiet resilience—and with his little sister Pickles right by his side.
Cucumber is deeply bonded with Pickles, and their connection is truly heartwarming. He’s the steady older brother, often keeping a watchful, comforting presence nearby. They relax together, seek each other out for reassurance, and navigate new surroundings as a team. Through all the uncertainty, they’ve leaned on one another, and it’s clear how much comfort and confidence they draw from staying close.
Cucumber has a calm, gentle nature and appreciates affection from staff and volunteers. He may take a moment to settle in, but once he does, he shows just how sweet and loving he is.
Cucumber isn’t just looking for a home—he’s hoping to stay with his best friend and sister, Pickles, so they can continue sharing naps, head bumps, and life’s next chapter together. 💚

More about this shelter
The Associated Humane Societies rescues stray and homeless animals, both domestic and wildlife, providing quality care and sanctuary until loving homes can be found. As a community-based organization, we provide low-cost veterinary care and humane education to promote responsible pet guardianship throughout New Jersey.
For over a century we have offered a haven to abused and neglected animals. Founded in 1906, AHS is the largest animal sheltering system in New Jersey, operating three shelters located in Newark, Forked River, and Tinton Falls. Our Forked River facility also includes Popcorn Park. Established in 1977, Popcorn Park is a sanctuary for abandoned, injured, ill, exploited, abused, or elderly wildlife, exotic and farm animals, and birds.
The Society is a not-for-profit, 501(c)3 organization and we take pride in our devotion to the thousands of animals that come through our doors looking for a better life.
