My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Duke – A Sweet, Sensitive Boy Looking for His Forever Home

Name: Duke

Age: 1 year

Sex: Neutered male

Breed: Mixed

Color: Black / Brown

Weight: 9 kg (20 lbs)

Height: 36 cm (14 in) at shoulder

Rescue Story:

In late October 2024, Duke was found and brought into a municipal shelter as puppy. He has since grown into a gentle, thoughtful young dog who is now ready for a loving home of his own.

‍‍ With People

Duke is a little shy at first, but once you offer treats, he warms up quickly and allows handling and petting. He may bark at unfamiliar people initially, especially when they first enter the home, but with proper introductions (treats help a lot!), he builds trust and settles well.

Because he can be sensitive to outside noises and may bark in response, Duke may not be the best fit for apartment living. He doesn’t show much interest in children under 13, but he is gentle and can be picked up comfortably. Once bonded, he loves showing his belly for rubs

With Other Dogs

Duke generally gets along well with other dogs and enjoys playful interactions, especially with dogs similar in size and temperament. He prefers dogs who play nicely and respect boundaries.

That said, if he has had a negative experience with a specific dog, he tends to hold a grudge and may bark to chase them away. When he finds the right playmates, he becomes very playful and goofy.

With dogs, he’s energetic and social. With people, he’s calm and sweet — a nice balance!

With Cats

Duke has not lived with cats before. He may chase outdoor cats or moving animals, but an indoor cat test is possible.

Energy Level

When alone, Duke is calm and plays quietly with toys. Around other dogs, his energy level rises. He would do well as a second dog in an active home with another playful pup.

Walks & Leash

Duke once had a scary experience during early leash training, which caused some fear, so his walking training was done very slowly over about 6 months.

Current walking status:

• Loves sniffing and exploring

• Fully potty trained outdoors

• Slightly freezes when seeing fast-moving objects (bikes, etc.) but doesn’t panic

• Even lets unfamiliar men hold him

• Sensitive to sudden fast movements from people — slow, gentle handling is best

• Minimal leash pulling (usually stops immediately when there’s tension)

• Curious about other dogs; may react slightly if barked at, but redirects easily with guidance

We recommend no on-leash greetings with other dogs — off-leash play in safe environments works best for him.

Other Notes

• No food guarding (with people or dogs)

• Shares toys well

• Expresses fear through barking, so adopter should be patient and understanding

• Needs to be carried into the car (car rides are scary for him)

• Gets severe motion sickness and dislikes being confined in crates

• May need some separation anxiety training if he becomes an only dog

• Currently uses outdoor potty only

Ideal Home for Duke

Duke would thrive in a house with another friendly dog, patient adopters, and a calm environment. He’s a sensitive soul who just needs time, gentle handling, and understanding — and in return, he gives loyalty, sweetness, and quiet companionship.

If you’re looking for a dog who is sweet, thoughtful, and bonds deeply once trust is built, Duke might be your perfect match
