My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Watermelon and Bluebarry, a bonded pair of 6-month-old sweethearts who are truly something special. Their foster family calls them some of the finest kittens they’ve ever hosted—easygoing, affectionate, and wonderfully entertaining. These two adore each other, play beautifully together, use the litter box like pros, and have been polite and respectful with the household’s resident cats. Because they keep each other so happily occupied, they’re surprisingly easy kittens who know how to balance high-energy play with calm cuddle time.

Bluebarry (Barry) is a small dilute tortie with soft light grey and tan fur, mixed-color toe beans, and bright yellow eyes. She started out as the shy one but quickly revealed her inner hunter. Barry takes her job very seriously—anything on the ground is fair game, and she’s still perfecting her dramatic leaps and landings. You might catch her triumphantly sprinting through the house with a toy twice her size, a toilet paper roll, or even a stolen pair of underwear. Like her sisters, she loves burrowing under blankets and may wake you up with an enthusiastic pre-breakfast foot “attack” that’s equal parts hilarious and endearing.

Watermelon (Mellie) is a large grey striped tabby with striking yellow-green eyes, impressive ear tufts, and extra dewclaws on his thumbs, earning him the nickname “Double Dew Dude.” Already much bigger than his siblings, Mellie is expected to grow into a big adult cat—which is perfect, because he is a champion cuddler who loves to spoon. While he enjoys playtime and is an excellent hunter, he is deeply committed to his snuggle schedule. After dinner, he’s often the first to hop onto the couch, stretching out across an entire cushion and inviting tummy rubs like it’s his full-time job.

Together, Watermelon and Bluebarry spend their days playing hard, eating well, napping in cozy piles, and using the litter box perfectly every time. Their energy level sits around an 8 out of 10, but because they play so much with each other, it feels easy and manageable. They are currently thriving in a two-bedroom apartment with their foster family, two resident cats, and a bearded dragon.

If you’re looking for a bonded pair that brings the perfect mix of playfulness, affection, and built-in companionship, Watermelon and Bluebarry are ready to grow up together in their forever home.

Additional adoption info

Pet Haven is a foster-based rescue. Our animals live with foster families until they are placed in permanent homes and their foster families get to know the dogs and cats learning important information about the animals. For example, the foster family will know if the dog or cat is good with other animals or children, and will have a good idea of what kind of training, attention, and special needs the pet may require. This makes our foster families great resources for potential adopters!

More about this rescue

Our Mission
Pet Haven improves the lives of pets and the people who love them by rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming dogs and cats; reducing pet overpopulation by supporting spay and neuter efforts, and providing resources to people that help strengthen the human-animal bond.

Our Vision
A Minnesota where all pets live in safe, loving homes.

Our Values
Excellence in service and care; community; integrity; innovation; perseverance; compassion; a rewarding place to volunteer

How We Help
Spay/Neuter Initiative Program: Providing support to end pet overpopulation in Minnesota
Owner Surrender: Providing a safe haven for pet owners
Foster: Committed to finding forever homes for cats and dogs
Phoenix Fund for Special Needs: Providing veterinary care for animals in need of healing
What We Do
We help dogs and cats find homes with loving families through foster-based care. Every dog and cat lives with a foster family until they find their forever families. We provide all of their basic needs including proper food, veterinary care, behavior training, and supplies.

Through in-home fostering, we learn about each animal’s temperament, personality, likes/dislikes, and any medical needs. With this first-hand information, we can then find the right family for each dog and cat.

Our volunteers also educate the public on responsible companion animal care and represent respect for animals at all times. Whether we’re working with prospective new families, meeting people at public events, or socializing with friends and family, we encourage others to view and treat their pets as members of the family. We are their guardians, and they depend on us for companionship and care.

We spay/neuter prior to adoption.
We microchip all our Pet Haven Pets and remain as a secondary contact.
We make sure all pets are up to date on required vaccinations
We test for Heartworm and Lymes in all our dogs and are transparent in the results and treament
We test for FeLV/FIV and are transparent in the results. We believe that cats who test positive still deserve a chance at a quality home.
We do not euthanize animals unless they have untreatable health or behavioral conditions that deny them an acceptable quality of life or makes them a serious threat to people, other animals, or themselves.
How We Operate
We rely on adoption fees, tax-deductible donations, grants, and special events to keep our rescue operating. Our staff, Board of Directors, and volunteers have provided the passion and commitment to keep Pet Haven a safe haven for animals for almost 70 years.

We are committed to preventing pet homelessness through the SNIP Grant. Since 2005, we have granted more than $240,000 to organizations in Minnesota to support spay/neuter initiatives.
