This helps New Beginnings International Sporting Dog Rescue with pet care costs.
Socialization: Mercedes can be shy when meeting new people, but she warms up once she feels at ease. She does well with other dogs and loves her littermate Benz and the other dogs in her foster home. There is a cat that she hasn’t interacted much with but she could probably live with a cat or cats who were used to dogs.
Training: Mercedes is good in the house and is crated when foster mom is gone and overnight. She is good in her crate. She can chew things, so foster mom supervises her and her brother Benz since at 10.5 mos they can still get into mischief. She comes when called and overall is a very good girl.
Activity requirements: Mercedes and her brother Benz like going on walks together. They are both still shy but have made great strides in confidence while out walking. She loves to play in the yard and runs with her brother and also likes to retrieve a tennis ball-she won’t usually bring it back but loves to chase it. Between a daily walk and running /playing in the yard she gets enough exercise.
Fence requirements: A fenced yard is ideal but while it would be easier to have a fenced yard, she could go to a home that can provide lots of exercise without a fenced yard in other ways. An invisible fence may also be an option for her.
Personality: Mercedes is a very sweet dog who does love cuddling and attention. She loves chewing on her bone and hanging out in the evening. She is great in that she’s active but once she’s exercised, she’s calm and happy to be wherever her human is. She is a playful and social dog but she is initially shy until she feels comfortable.
Health history: She is spayed, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, and on monthly heartworm prevention. She's a very healthy dog with no medical issues. Her next leishmaniasis test is due in November, 2026.
This dog originates from Greece where Leishmaniasis is endemic. They tested negative before coming to the USA, but the parasite can remain dormant in the system for many years, so potential adopters must be willing to commit to annual testing for the next 7 years. Typically, the test needs to be sent to a special lab, but any regular vet can draw the blood and send it to the lab. The cost of the test seems to vary widely by area, but is approximately $150-$250. or if your vet is willing to send the test to a veterinary college lab, cost can be as low as $80.
Foster comments: An ideal home for Mercedes will be one that can give her lots of love and appreciate her beauty and wonderful personality!
