Avaric was pulled from a local shelter after being red-listed due to severe emaciation. He was in urgent need of rescue placement so he could safely begin gaining weight and receive proper care, and we’re so glad he’s now with us at Pug Nation.
When Avaric arrived, he was dangerously underweight and had clearly gone a long time without consistent food. To keep him safe while starting to gain weight he started on multiple small meals a day to avoid refeeding syndrome, and he’s been doing great! He’s already gained some weight and continues to improve, though he still has more to gain. After thorough vet exams and lab work, there’s no underlying medical cause for his condition. He was simply starved.
Now that he’s feeling a bit better, Avaric’s personality is coming through. He’s extremely food motivated (understandably), energetic, and full of life. He loves people, enjoys playing with other dogs, and has a big voice when food is involved. He’s also wonderfully unique looking, with one floppy ear, one upright ear, a big underbite, and long, deer-like legs. We think he may be a Chihuahua–Pug mix, and he’s as silly as he is adorable!
Avaric would do best in a home with an active owner who isn’t gone long hours and can continue helping him gain weight and confidence. He’s ready for a life filled with regular meals, adventure, and the love he missed out on for far too long. Interested in giving this incredibly resilient dog the home he truly deserves? Please inquire today!

More about this rescue
Pug Nation Rescue of Los Angeles is a registered 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to the rescue, care, and placement of abandoned, neglected, unwanted, displaced, and abused pugs. Our goal is to find every homeless pug a forever home; if we cannot do that, we pledge to provide a comfortable and loving place for sick or unwanted pugs to live out their lives. Our Board of five and numerous volunteers are passionate about Pug Rescue and live by our motto of “One Pug at a Time”. We feel that through our efforts we can change many of these forgotten Pug’s lives. In order to find our Pugs a home as soon as possible, we hold at least three adoption fairs a month and also organize a number of fundraising events, including the annual Pugtacular festival and Legendary Bingo at Hamburger Mary’s in West Hollywood. These events and on-line fundraising have provided the money to help pay for vet treatments, medicine and loving care at our Pug Station. We rely on the generosity of our supporters through donations and participation in our fundraising activities. If you would like to make a donation, find out about the next event, become a volunteer, foster, or adopt your own rescue pug, you are in the right place! You can also follow us on Facebook and twitter, there is always something going on and new pugs needing your help.
