Here's what the humans have to say about me:
🐾 Meet Birdo!
Birdo might start off a bit shy, but give him a little time and you’ll discover a total cuddlebug waiting to bloom. This sweet 3-year-old terrier mix is still growing his confidence, especially on leash. New adventures can feel big and scary, but with patience, encouragement, and lots of love, he’s learning that the world isn’t such a frightening place after all.
What is Birdo absolutely amazing at? Snuggles. The second he’s with you, he wants to be as close as possible—climbing into your lap, leaning into your chest, and quietly asking to be held. He’s a comfort seeker, a gentle soul who just wants to feel safe and cherished.
Birdo’s ideal home would be calm and understanding, with people willing to move at his pace while he builds up his bravery. In return, he’ll give you unwavering devotion and a best friend who believes there is no better spot in the universe than your lap.
If you know that the shy ones love the hardest, Birdo is ready to wrap his paws right around your heart. 🤍🐶 Give us a call at (740) 314-5583 for more information!

More about this shelter
We are the Jefferson County Humane Society and , except for our humane officers (who are paid very nominally), we are all volunteers! Our members were instrumental in getting a local levy passed to build a new and larger shelter and the doors opened in 2011. We are currently participating in Iams Home for the Holidays Program and the Purina Pets for People grant program. We are actively pursuing other grants and recently have been asked by the county to partner with them in the operation of the new shelter. Since we are a humane society, our main focus is on getting animals spayed and neutered so there are no more homeless pets. To that end, we bring in a mobile animal surgical clinic who performs spays and neuters at a reduced rate. We are always looking for volunteers to help us in our efforts and, of course, for financial contributions (we are a non-profit, 501 (c)3) and pet adopters! Other items such as food, treats, pet carriers, cages, leashes, collars, food bowls, etc. are also ALWAYS welcomed and appreciated. Please contact us if you have an item to be donated or would like to volunteer with us to try to save some of these homeless, but very loveable, dogs!
