✨Meet Bessy!✨ Bessy is a 2-month-old Beagle mix who came into us as a surrender from a commercial breeding facility (aka Puppy Mill) in Lancaster County because she had obvious medical issues from birth and could not be sold. Sadly, poor breeding practices in puppy mills (unhealthy parent dogs, inbreeding, lack of genetic or health screening, and repeated overbreeding) frequently result in puppies being born with serious medical conditions. Rescues like ours are often the only hope for dogs who are born “unprofitable.” After Bessy arrived in our care, she was examined by our veterinary team, who discovered that she has two massive hernias—an umbilical hernia and an inguinal hernia. This condition is congenital, meaning she was born with it, and it can become life-threatening if left untreated. Thankfully, both of Bessy’s hernias can be surgically repaired, fully resolving the issue. Bessy is a sweet but shy puppy who will require a family up to the task of providing her the ample physical/mental exercise and training that all puppies require. Puppies require a family who can continue their basic training and socialization skills to grow into confident and happy adult dogs! This friend has just arrived to us on transport from a high-intake shelter partner! When our friends are new to us, we are often unsure of their full background. Our staff will spend some time getting to know them and update their bio with more information as we learn. They are pending interactions with animals until they have been cleared by our vet. Please note that we often are unsure of house, crate, car, and leash training status upon arrival. If you are interested in adopting this dog, please submit an adoption questionnaire! Our adoption process is on a first-come, best-match basis and we are not able to hold animals. If you are interested in this specific dog but it ends up not being the best fit upon meeting, our adoption counselors will work with you to help find a match! All household members, including children and other dogs, must come along for the meeting to make sure it's a good fit. If a match is made, we encourage same-day adoptions! Our adoption fees include the animals' spay/neuter, microchip, age-appropriate vaccinations and preventatives, fecal testing, heartworm testing, and a small bag of food to get you started.
