Story
Duke (or Marty as his foster family has nicknamed him) is a 6-year-old Basset mix with a mellow, curious nature and a personality that slowly reveals itself to those willing to be patient. He can be shy and unsure at first, especially with new people or too much direct attention, but he’s been making steady progress and now happily takes treats from gentle hands. Duke may not have spent much time as an indoor dog before, but he’s learning the comforts of home one blanket at a time. When he feels safe, his sweet side comes out in the form of quiet companionship and devotion.Duke is a low-key charmer who loves other dogs, rarely barks, and has impeccable manners when it comes to food and furniture. He doesn’t jump on people, won’t counter-surf, and usually shadows his favorite humans. He enjoys walks and exercise, especially when he can really stretch his legs, and the more activity he gets, the better he does with his house-training routine. While he’s still working on potty habits and does best with structure and consistency, he is making progress and improving every day.Duke is not a fan of crates or confinement and will need a home willing to work around that while continuing positive training. He’s clingy in the best way, happiest curled up on the couch under a blanket, and will loyally wait outside the bathroom door like a devoted little bodyguard. He has a joyful, heart-melting “happy dance” that appears during dinnertime, transforming him into a completely different dog. Duke is looking for a patient, understanding home that sees his quirks not as flaws, but as part of what makes him uniquely lovable.Duke is a work in progress and needs a devoted patient family to help him grow into the best version of himself! Contact BROOD today to meet Duke! His adoption fee is $250.00.**Only BROOD-approved adopters can meet a dog (no exceptions). Story
Chai is a 5-year-old classic Basset with a soft heart and a tender spirit. She can be very shy when meeting new people and may hide at first, but given a little time and kindness, she warms up beautifully. Once she feels safe, her affectionate side shines and she becomes devoted to her person. With other dogs, Chai is instantly at ease and clearly finds comfort in canine companionship.Outside, Chai enjoys playing in the yard, going for walks, and even snacking on snowballs when the weather allows. Indoors, she’s a total couch potato who loves to relax and stay close to her favorite human. She is house-trained, crate-trained, and actually enjoys her crate, making her wonderfully easy to care for. Her moderate activity level makes her a great balance of playful and calm.Chai would thrive in a patient, loving home that understands shy dogs and allows her to build trust at her own pace. She would likely be happiest with another friendly dog in the home, though she may adjust to being an only dog once she’s fully bonded. She has done well around older children and is believed to be fine with cats. If you’re looking for a gentle, loyal companion who blossoms with love, Chai may be the perfect match. Contact BROOD today to meet Chai! Her adoption fee is $300.00.**Only BROOD-approved adopters can meet a dog (no exceptions). Story
Woody is an active, fun-loving 3-year-old Basset Hound mix who’s ready to bring energy, joy, and plenty of laughs to his forever home! This happy guy still has some puppy habits—especially his love for chewing. Whether it’s a squeaky toy, tasty treat, chew bone, or (oops!) something he shouldn’t have, Woody will happily test it out. His new family will want to keep tempting items out of reach to set him up for success.Woody is house-trained and generally a quiet companion, speaking up only when the doorbell rings or someone unfamiliar comes by. He thrives on playtime and would do best with a fenced yard where he can run to his heart’s content. He’d love to have a canine buddy to wrestle and romp with, but he’s also happy as an only dog—as long as he has enough human companionship and activities to keep him busy.Woody loves children, especially older kids who can keep up with his playful energy and don’t mind his sometimes-rough play style. He’s a loyal shadow, always happy to follow his family around and curl up nearby for a nap. Walks are another favorite, and he’s making great progress on his leash manners. With his quick mind and eagerness to please, Woody is a joy to train. If you’re looking for a spirited, affectionate companion who’s always up for fun, Woody could be the perfect match. Contact BROOD today to meet him! His adoption fee is $250.00.**Only BROOD-approved adopters can meet a dog (no exceptions). Story
Jansen is a 1-year-old Beagle/Heeler mix, weighing about 23 lbs, with a tender heart and a whole lot to learn about the good life. Before coming to the shelter, Jansen lived outdoors on a chain and never experienced a cozy, cared-for home. Because of that, much of the world is still new to him — indoor life, routines, and the idea that people and places can be safe and predictable. Jansen is a sensitive, sweet puppy who can sometimes meet new situations with a bit of bravado. In unfamiliar or stressful moments, he may try to act bigger than he feels, especially around other dogs. This behavior appears to be rooted in insecurity rather than true assertiveness, and he benefits from slow, thoughtful introductions and calm handling. Once Jansen has time to settle and feel safe, his softer side emerges. He becomes loose, wiggly, and playful, showing off a joyful puppy personality and a sense of humor that’s hard not to smile at. He enjoys movement and interaction but does best when play stays gentle and structured as he continues building confidence. When walked through the cat room, Jansen showed no significant interest in the cats, though as with any pet, careful introductions in a home are always recommended. Jansen will thrive in a home that offers patience, consistency, positive reinforcement, and understanding as he continues learning what it means to be a loved indoor companion. He’s still taking puppy steps — and doing his best every day. Jansen is neutered, microchipped, heartworm tested, up to date on vaccinations (including rabies), dewormed, and started on flea/tick prevention. Story
Randall is a sweet, gentle little 5 year old-20lb- Beagle who came to the shelter as a stray — dirty, stinky, and clearly in need of some TLC. Since then, he’s had his spa day, complete with a bubble bath, and now he’s fresh, clean, and ready for a brand-new chapter. This boy is all heart. Randall is a lap-loving sweetheart who is happiest when he’s close to his people, soaking up affection. True to his Beagle roots, his nose is often to the ground, exploring the world around him, but he’s just as happy pausing for pets and cuddles along the way. He has done well with the dogs he has met and shows no real interest in the cat room, making him a nice option for a variety of homes. Randall is the kind of companion who just wants to be near you, sharing life’s quiet moments and everyday adventures. Randall is neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, dewormed, heartworm tested, and on monthly preventatives. Apply to adopt here: https://orangecountyva.gov/159/Pet-Adoption-Foster-Care-Information

Story
MEET Hamburglar, an approximately 5-year-old Beagle weighing around 16 lbs. Hamburglar arrived at the shelter as a stray—dirty, stinky, tail wagging, and with his nose firmly glued to the ground in search of food. From the moment he came in, it was clear this little guy’s heart (and motivation) lives in the snack aisle. Hamburglar is a classic Beagle through and through: curious, determined, and always convinced there’s something delicious just around the corner. He is all about the snackies and would happily sign up for second, third, fifth, and possibly sixteenth breakfast if given the chance. His food motivation makes him a fun and engaging companion and a great candidate for reward-based training. Hamburglar has done well with other dogs he has met. In the cat room, he is curious but primarily focused on all the interesting (and very tempting) food smells around him. Despite his rough start, he is friendly, upbeat, and carries himself with a confident little strut that suggests he believes he runs the place. Vetting: Hamburglarwill be neutered, microchipped, heartworm tested, and is up to date on his vaccinations. He has received dewormer and is current on flea, tick, and heartworm prevention.
