Story
Duke (or Marty as his foster family has nicknamed him) is a 6-year-old Basset mix with a mellow, curious nature and a personality that slowly reveals itself to those willing to be patient. He can be shy and unsure at first, especially with new people or too much direct attention, but he’s been making steady progress and now happily takes treats from gentle hands. Duke may not have spent much time as an indoor dog before, but he’s learning the comforts of home one blanket at a time. When he feels safe, his sweet side comes out in the form of quiet companionship and devotion.Duke is a low-key charmer who loves other dogs, rarely barks, and has impeccable manners when it comes to food and furniture. He doesn’t jump on people, won’t counter-surf, and usually shadows his favorite humans. He enjoys walks and exercise, especially when he can really stretch his legs, and the more activity he gets, the better he does with his house-training routine. While he’s still working on potty habits and does best with structure and consistency, he is making progress and improving every day.Duke is not a fan of crates or confinement and will need a home willing to work around that while continuing positive training. He’s clingy in the best way, happiest curled up on the couch under a blanket, and will loyally wait outside the bathroom door like a devoted little bodyguard. He has a joyful, heart-melting “happy dance” that appears during dinnertime, transforming him into a completely different dog. Duke is looking for a patient, understanding home that sees his quirks not as flaws, but as part of what makes him uniquely lovable.Duke is a work in progress and needs a devoted patient family to help him grow into the best version of himself! Contact BROOD today to meet Duke! His adoption fee is $250.00.**Only BROOD-approved adopters can meet a dog (no exceptions). Story
Copper 3 is a sweet, playful young Basset mix, just around a year old, with a moderate energy level and a gentle heart. He can be shy when first meeting new people and prefers to take his time getting acquainted. Once he feels safe, he becomes wonderfully affectionate and loves staying close to his people. He has especially bonded with the children in his foster home and truly enjoys being part of family life.Copper 3 loves to play and has a blast with stuffy toys, balls, and a good game of tug-of-war. He enjoys running in a fenced yard, zooming with excitement, and playing with other dogs, making him a great fit for a home with a canine companion. He can be a bit enthusiastic about his toys and food, so he would do best with dogs his size or larger and should be fed separately. With structure and consistency, he continues to grow in confidence and good manners.Copper 3 is housetrained and does very well when given regular potty reminders. He is crate trained and may need a little encouragement to go in, but he settles nicely once inside. He knows how to sit and will happily offer his paw when you say “paw,” and he absolutely loves going bye-bye for walks and adventures. This loving, playful boy is ready to find his forever family and continue blossoming with a patient, caring home — contact BROOD today to meet Copper 3! His adoption fee is $250.00.**Only BROOD-approved adopters can meet a dog (no exceptions). Our adoption application is on the BROOD website at https://brood-va.org/adoptionapp/. Story
Cooper is a 2-year-old classic Basset Hound with a joyful spirit and a heart full of love. He’s wildly affectionate and happiest when he’s right beside his people — or better yet, curled up in your lap or tucked behind your legs. A true social butterfly, Cooper enjoys meeting new friends and following his family from room to room like a devoted little shadow. With bursts of playful energy followed by cozy crash sessions, he brings the perfect mix of fun and snuggles to daily life.Cooper loves chasing balls, working on treat puzzles, and enjoying frozen peanut butter bones to keep his busy mind engaged. He plays wonderfully with other dogs and would thrive in a home with a canine companion, though he could also be happy as an only dog soaking up all the attention. He currently lives with a cat and has made great progress learning not to chase, but he may need continued guidance in a new home. Because he’s a big, enthusiastic boy who can be a bit jumpy when excited, he would do best with children around 10 and up.He is housetrained, sleeps soundly through the night, and patiently waits to go out in the morning. Cooper walks fairly well on leash, though he’s still polishing his manners since he wants to greet everyone he sees. He can be vocal when excited or when left alone and shows some separation anxiety, so a home with patience and consistency — and possibly a yard — would help him continue to thrive. With his happy-go-lucky personality, eagerness to learn, and deep devotion to his people, Cooper is ready to make one lucky family incredibly happy. Contact BROOD today to meet Cooper! His adoption fee is $400.00.**Only BROOD-approved adopters can meet a dog (no exceptions). Our adoption application is on the BROOD website at https://brood-va.org/adoptionapp/. Story
Jade is a very sweet girl who was surrendered after we were contacted about her sitting in a North Carolina animal shelter. She was surrendered by her owner because of the back to back UTI (urinary tract infection) she kept getting. She has had X-rays and ultrasounds that all showed normal. She is currently on antibiotics and seems to be responding. We will keep her on UTI supplements to help support her bladder. She is housebroken and is good about holding it until she is let outside. Jade does great with other animals and has been tested with large and small dogs. We learned she is not good with cats and will chase them. Jade is a very happy, loving girl who loves to be with family. She is crate trained, but will throw a fit at first. She does settle in and is great in her crate through the night. Jade is a scruffy and stocky girl who is eager to please and just wants to be a part of a family. https://adopt.animalsfirst.com/animal/66b189c45d6f9afa2c07afb8/6963cffd7ddf5238ed0f9297

Story
Jansen is a 1-year-old Beagle/Heeler mix, weighing about 23 lbs, with a tender heart and a whole lot to learn about the good life. Before coming to the shelter, Jansen lived outdoors on a chain and never experienced a cozy, cared-for home. Because of that, much of the world is still new to him — indoor life, routines, and the idea that people and places can be safe and predictable. Jansen is a sensitive, sweet puppy who can sometimes meet new situations with a bit of bravado. In unfamiliar or stressful moments, he may try to act bigger than he feels, especially around other dogs. This behavior appears to be rooted in insecurity rather than true assertiveness, and he benefits from slow, thoughtful introductions and calm handling. Once Jansen has time to settle and feel safe, his softer side emerges. He becomes loose, wiggly, and playful, showing off a joyful puppy personality and a sense of humor that’s hard not to smile at. He enjoys movement and interaction but does best when play stays gentle and structured as he continues building confidence. When walked through the cat room, Jansen showed no significant interest in the cats, though as with any pet, careful introductions in a home are always recommended. Jansen will thrive in a home that offers patience, consistency, positive reinforcement, and understanding as he continues learning what it means to be a loved indoor companion. He’s still taking puppy steps — and doing his best every day. Jansen is neutered, microchipped, heartworm tested, up to date on vaccinations (including rabies), dewormed, and started on flea/tick prevention.
