Story
I am Penny K, the K is for Kandy which was my original name when I first came to BROOD as just a wee pup. I was adopted and had a great six years with my family. But my family didn't have enough time for me as the family grew and required most of their attention. Now I am back with BROOD looking for a new family.I am incredibly sweet and loving and no one can pass me by without saying Hi. I was a favorite at my doggie day care and everyone was always happy to see me. I have a lovely hound voice that I use often to get someone's attention so they will pet me or to speed you along when it's dinner time. And at night when my foster family is trying to sleep, I start to sing to remind you that I am there. So it's best if I'm crated at night so we can all get some rest. I would not make a happy neighbor in an apartment situation as I am too vocal.I am housetrained and love being able to roam the yard until my heart is content. I long to be free and don't walk well on a leash. I can then be stubborn and just want to come back in the house where the sofa is. I will need to go to a home with a secure fence to keep me safe.I really love children and have a mothering instinct. I lived with four children under the age of seven in my former home. I get along with any dog I meet and even do well with cats. My prior owner had chickens and I felt it was my duty to protect them from any predators and would chase other critters away. I am the perfect house guest, sweet, loving well behaved, and don't need much more than your love. Please contact BROOD today!!! My adoption fee is $250.**Only BROOD-approved adopters can meet a dog (no exceptions). Our adoption application is on the BROOD website at https://brood-va.org/adoptionapp/. We adopt to residents of Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia, DC, Delaware, and southern Pennsylvania. Do not apply to adopt from BROOD if you live in another state. We require a virtual home visit and a veterinary reference. The age of many BROOD dogs is unknown, as very few come with official records. The estimate on the dog's age is usually the initial estimate given by the receiving shelter, which may be different from that given at the time of the initial checkup. Different veterinarians may also give different ages, and those different opinions are sometimes reflected on the record. ***BROOD's adoption fees are determined based on the age of the dog. 11/05/2023

Story
I'm a Barbie girl, in a Basset world!!! That's right, my name is Barbie and I am a Basset-Beagle mix, or Bagel if you prefer, and am about 8 years old. I came to BROOD after my owner passed away. Friends and family were able to find homes for all my other brothers and sisters but no one wanted me. Now BROOD is helping me to find a forever home that can love and appreciate a sweet, gentle soul like me.I am crate-trained and can happily snooze the day away waiting on your return. I am working on my house training. My foster mom said I have selective hearing and can easily ignore her when I am being extra stubborn and don't want to listen. I don't need much to be happy and am very easy to care for. A few short trips outside to sniff or a short walk around the block is enough for me. I am a social butterfly and will stop to say hello to every dog, person or child we meet along the way.Although I am rather independent, I do love other dogs and children. I enjoy my own space so would be best with children old enough to understand I don't always want to play. I love getting attention and will never say no to pets and belly rubs! I love a big chewy bone to gnaw on. I am quiet and usually only bark to greet my family when they come home or let them know I want to go out. I'd be a great apartment companion due to my small size and soft voice. I do have a bit of wanderlust so any fenced area needs to be secure to deter me from testing my boundaries to see if the grass really is greener on the other side. I love blankets and will work to get them positioned just right for a nice long siesta or a quick nap in the sun. I am not one to play much with toys but happily gather all the stuffies I can find into one big pile for me to snuggle up with. I am a champ at sleeping, and snoring! I am a hearty eater at mealtime and will dance and prance with excitement when my foster mom is getting dinner ready. I get along with other dogs and don't even mind cats. You may notice in my photos that I recently had surgery. I had a very large cyst that was easily removed. It won't grow back and will require no additional treatment.I am an easy to love, happy, smiley, simple gal that is sure to melt your heart! Please contact BROOD today!!! My adoption fee is $150.00.**Only BROOD-approved adopters can meet a dog (no exceptions). Our adoption application is on the BROOD website at https://brood-va.org/adoptionapp/. Story
I'm the marvelous Milo! I am a 6-year-old Basset mix, with the softest fluffiest fur you'll ever feel. BROOD is helping me find my forever home for the second time. I was initially adopted in 2017, but my family moved and couldn't take me with them. I know I don't have a lot of the typical Basset features like long ears and a low body, but I do have the sweet loving loyal personality of a faithful hound.I am house-trained and can use a doggie door. My foster family has never had to crate me because I am very well-behaved and can be trusted to not make a mess. I am very smart and know lots of words. I take cues from my foster family and know when my foster mom gets her walking shoes on that it is time to go and get so excited. When I see her pick up her backpack, I know it's time for a ride in the car to someplace new and will jump for joy to go on an adventure! I am easy to care for and don't require much to be happy. I love tennis balls and usually carry one with me wherever I go. (Be sure to check out my video!) I am a good sleeper and gladly wait for my family to wake in the morning before starting my day. I like taking a few short walks a day but I'm not one for all this nasty heat. Sometimes on very hot days, I just have to put my feet down and say no! I'm looking for a quiet calm family to love and appreciate me. I need a home without cats as I tend to chase them. I need to be the only dog in the home as the energy level of other dogs is usually too intense for me. I love children as long as they are old enough to understand proper interactions with dogs. Loud noises will startle me so I'd not do well in an apartment or a busy city environment. I am scared of thunderstorms and do take medication to help me deal with the stress of the noise.I have been with BROOD for over 13 months (!!) now and I think it is time that I lay down roots with a new family who will love me like I deserve. Will that be you? Please contact BROOD today. My adoption fee is sponsored by a BROOD supporter who hopes I will be adopted soon.**Only BROOD-approved adopters can meet a dog (no exceptions). Story
I am a happy-go-lucky girl named Au Jus, or AJ for short. I'm not sure how I got that name but I can sometimes be a picky eater so maybe it's a gourmet name for my particular palate. I am an 8 year young Basset mix. Don't let my age fool you! I do love a comfy couch and a long snooze, but also have the occasional zoomies and can run stairs like a champ! I was a little slow and had a few extra pounds when BROOD rescued me. The vet determined I have a minor thyroid condition and I need to take medication to keep me at a healthy weight and stay active.I am mostly house-trained and will only have a small accident in the house if my foster mom is gone for several hours. I am a true social butterfly and make friends with every person, dog, and child I meet, in the right situation. I get along great with other dogs that are smaller than me (I am just about 40ish pounds, by the way). I am a little cautious of bigger dogs and tend to go into a protective mode with my foster mom. I'm not so sure about cats, they seem a little strange to me. I just absolutely love belly rubs and will quickly roll over to get some pets and scratches from anyone, even strangers. I'd fit in with any family and any living situation. I would do well in an apartment or home without a fenced yard as long as I had some walks and exercise. I love going to the dog park and playing with all my friends. But I like to frequently check in with my family to let them know I am having such a great time! I do have the typical Basset stubbornness (but I can always be bribed by treats!!!!) and will dig my paws in when I don't want to do something. I love napping on the couch and a girl needs her beauty rest!!!I've got a great personality which you can see from all my photos. My sunny disposition really shines through! I am a sweet loving girl with a bit of a goofy side. My favorite treat is a kong filled with peanut butter, it's the best! And I hope you don't mind a wet face because I love giving kisses to let you know how happy I am and loving life.I am a low-maintenance girl and can't wait to be your new best friend! Please contact BROOD today!!! My adoption fee is $150.00.**Only BROOD-approved adopters can meet a dog (no exceptions). Story
I am a special little lady looking for a special family and home. I am Lily, a 6-year-old classic Basset. I came to BROOD from a pretty bustling home that I shared with 9 other dogs and a pack of cats so there was always something going on. So much activity and I was never ever alone. I guess I am used to that brand of chaos because it's been a little difficult to adjust to a normal family life. I am house-trained and crate-trained. I need daily medication that really helps with my anxiety. I get a little worked up when I think my humans have left me behind and will search the house looking for them. I would do best in a home where there are people around most of the time and will need to be crated when left alone. Being with a canine friend helps my anxiety too so I must go to a home with another dog. Fall is my favorite time of year and I love being outside in the cooler air. I will wander until I find a patch of sun warming the deck and then settle in to take a nice long nap. I will happily follow my foster dad with my tail wagging and a smile on my face as he refills the bird feeders in the yard. Someone has to supervise to make sure he's doing a good job!I am a great, sweet, smart loving girl. But my foster family is worried that any potential adopter will have a hard time seeing that. I am a firm believer in "stranger danger" and will bark to help ease my stress whenever I am in a new and uncomfortable situation. I am just nervous and unsure and takes me some time to feel safe. I will need a very kind, patient loving family to let me take things at my own pace as I adjust to my forever home and new life. Once I get past my fear, I am a very loving and loyal companion who will be your shadow. I hope you have a comfy couch ready for me so we can snuggle up and keep warm through the winter!Do you have the special love that I need??? Please contact BROOD today!!! Story
I am a sweet calm, 2 year old Bassett mix named Sally. But you can call me Daisy as I prefer to be called. I came to BROOD after my owner couldn't care for me anymore. And BROOD has so many other Daisy's that wanted to name me something different. I wasn't looking my best when I was rescued, I was pretty thin and needed to gain a few pounds. I'm looking and feeling so much better now and ready for my forever home!I am working on my housetraining. I often forget to potty when I am outside because I am having so much fun playing and tracking down all the smells. I am very shy and can take a bit of time to warm up to new people and dogs. But once I feel safe and comfortable, I am a snuggle buddy. I am very quiet and never bark. Maybe that's why loud noises startle me so much. I would not do well in an apartment or a loud city because of all the commotion. I love children but would likely be best with older children that aren't so noisy. I would do fine in a home without a fenced yard but must always be on a leash then when we go outside. The first loud noise I hear and I will run to get as far away as I can. I am slowly learning to not be fearful of noises in my foster home, but any type of fan is my number one enemy. I am very loving and loyal once I warm up to new situations. I recently found the fun that is playing with squeaky toys! I am also very calm and laid back considering my young age. I am excited when my family comes home or when it's time to go out on a walk. But always ready to cuddle on the couch when it's time to relax. I will need a patient family to give me some time to adjust to a new life. Can that be you?? Please contact BROOD today!!! You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Baxter’s not a dachshund.  He’s a basset mix, obviously.  Baxter is under a year old, and he’s not your typical shelter puppy!  He knows how to sit, is housebroken, is crate-trained, and has good manners with other dogs!  He chases cats, because he’s a hound.  He loves kids.  I know this is a short bio, but what else can I say?  He’s just about perfect.  Baxter is being fostered in Waynesboro, VA, and is ready to find his forever home!Visit this organization's web site to see any additional information available about this pet.November 16, 2023, 12:19 am

Imagine this: It's a cold winter morning and you're feeling a bit chilled. Not to worry, as I will always find your lap to sit on and keep you toasty warm. Maybe after some cuddles, we can get out of the house for a nice long walk and play some fetch where I'll promise to bring the ball back every time (okay, fine, maybe not EVERY time). After some exercise, I'll keep myself entertained for hours with a stuffed toy, though I can't promise I'll clean up the mess I make afterwards. I'm cute, I'm playful, I'm friendly, I'm pretty much the full package... come visit me and I'll promise to be your best friend furrrrever!
