Story
Meet Beau! Beau is a loving, cuddly companion with a playful personality and an adventurous spirit. He enjoys exploring, playing, and spending time with his people, but he's just as happy curling up on the couch or in his own bed at the end of the day. Beau is fully potty trained and has excellent nighttime habits—he sleeps quietly in his bed and does not require a crate. Beau could do okay with children. He has a talent for spotting snacks from across the room! Because he loves food, he may help himself to treats from little hands if given the opportunity and is usually a little too rough. Beau thrives with clear boundaries and a confident owner who can continue reinforcing good manners. While he is house trained, he can be a bit enthusiastic and still needs reminders about household etiquette. He is also sensitive about being physically restrained and may react by nipping if someone grabs his collar unexpectedly. Beau has so much to offer to the right family!

Story
Meet Bailey 🐾Your Front-Porch Sidekick Bailey is a beagle with a nose for adventure and a heart full of charm. Equal parts curious and cuddly, Bailey is the kind of dog who’d fit right in on a front porch, watching the world go by like it’s the evening news. Bailey’s got that classic beagle personality—friendly, loyal, and just stubborn enough to keep life interesting. Whether it’s following a scent like it’s serious business or settling in for some well-earned relaxation, Bailey brings a little everyday joy wherever those paws go. Think of Bailey as the kind of companion who’d help you “supervise” chores, keep an eye on the yard, and remind you to take breaks (preferably with snacks involved). No actual farm experience required—just a sense of humor and a soft spot for a dog who knows how to enjoy the simple things. If you’re looking for a loyal buddy with a little country charm and a lot of heart, Bailey’s ready to pull up a chair and stay awhile.

Story
Jolene was born around June 24, 2022 and weighs about 20-25 pounds.  Jolene came to us from Kentucky with the one hour at a time volunteer transport team and a very kind overnight foster person.  Everyone along the way adored her as we do now! Jolene did have a home in Kentucky with the town drunk and he tossed her out the front door and said he 'wanted her gone'.  A kind neighbor called her over and kept her until she could get her into the hands of another kind person and then she, tearfully, loaded her in the first transport car to come here to us.  She is very sweet and affectionate and really loves to be carried (good thing she's little) and snuggled with and have her belly rubbed.  Jolene rides well in the car and LOVES to wrestle, play, run, with other dogs and she does need another fun playmate in her next life and a large enough, physically fenced, safe area in which they can release the energy she has.   She is also a very good swimmer.  She is not a constant barker, but when she feels like it she sure can whoop it up and when she is on a trail of some fun odor she can be heard a ways away.  The Adoption Fee for this dog is $500.00 Adoptions fees vary based on adoptability. Story
Briggs was born around June 1, 2020, and weighs a little too much at 35 pounds.   Briggs is with us because he kept escaping his yard, and his owner could no longer afford to bail him out of doggy jail. Briggs new home will need to have a secure fenced yard and be closely monitored while outside.  Briggs is your typical sweet, happy beagle that adores his humans and likes to have fun.  Briggs rides well in the car and walks like a beagle on leash :).  Briggs has lived with other dogs and cats and does well with both. We are told he is good with children, except he can get testy with tiny kids who 'poke and prod' him. We are thinking that perhaps another companion dog in his next home would be best for helping to burn off some energy.  This is all we know so far, and we will be learning as we go, and so will you!  The Adoption Fee for this dog is $450.00 Adoptions fees vary based on adoptability. Story
Update 4/2026 We have made the decision that Ace should be a Joyful sanctuary dog as he's been here over a year now and he is likely the happiest he has ever been in his life and chances are he's not going to make another year with his cancer diagnosis that is not surgically correctable.  We love Ace and will let him go peacefully and painlessly when it is his time.  Ace was born about May 28, 2016 and weighs about 43 lbs.  He is a really adorable and HAPPY tri-colored boy that was released to us after his human went into assisted memory care.  We were sent a photo of a small shack with a dirt floor and a hole for him to go outside into a small fenced area and then he got to get out to go rabbit huntin' now and then.  Well, no more and here he is in his foster home all clean, warm and cozy with a choice of blankies to cuddle in.  He adores us humans and strives to be near us.  His tail is constantly in motion whenever we look his way or talk to him.  Speaking of his tail, we were sad to discover that there is a plum sized mass under the base of his tail and at the top of his rectum.   The mass was biopsied and it is cancerous and in a location that we were advised would be extremely difficult to fix with a  potential the surgery would be fatal.  So, Ace is a hospice case and he is welcome to spend his life here with us, but maybe a special human will come along willing to adopt him.  At this time he has no idea he has any issues.  Ace is happy, appears healthy, and is loving life!   He quickly learned the dog door and he, and the friend he came here with, were absolutely delighted to have so much yard to meander and sniff!  Ace did well on his car ride here and he does fine on leash.  He is excellent with all the other dogs here small and large, he's never been around cats.  He is a love and we love him already and we know there are humans out there that can show Ace what his life should have always been like and give him all the love that he's missed out on all these years! Story
Update 4/2026 We've made the decision to welcome Lucy to the Joyful sanctuary life as she loves us as much as she can ever love a human - especially Jeff!  Lucy makes us laugh every day and we love her even though she is often a crotchety ancient Beagle.  Lucy has become a part of the Joyful family and she would be miserable if she left here and it would be likely she'd be returned shortly after as she wouldn't be happy if all her needs were not catered to as they are here.   Lucy was born about May 20, 2013 and weighs about 22 pounds.  She is one sweet, loving, senior gal that we are so happy to be able to help her not be killed before her time.  We love Lucy and we do realize a forever home for her may or may not come along but no matter she will have a home here until it is her natural time to cross the Rainbow Bridge.  She came in through dog control and when we decided to take the adorable young Beagle named Lottie it was decided that we were not leaving Lucy behind!  With so many changes it did take her a couple days to feel at home and the first sign that she was beginning to realize she was safe and loved was when she jumped up to sit in her foster Dad's lap for the first time.  She hasn't said much since arriving, she enjoys co-mingling with the other dogs but would probably do fine as an only dog or fine with other dogs, maybe a rambunctious puppy would be a bit much.  We assume she has normal breed wanderlust so will need to live in a safe environment.   Now it's time to go over the documented notes from her veterinary visit:  temperature, heart and lungs were good, crinkled cartilage of pinna (ear flap), suspect previous hematoma likely due to persistent scratching because of untreated ear infections and definitive hearing loss is evident, she walks stiff legged with obvious signs of arthritis that would be helped by daily Rimadyl or other anti-inflammatory, there is normal old age cloudiness in her eyes, but sight is adequate for now, her teeth are just filthy and we will be doing a dental for her, but due to the condition another one will likely be needed in the not so distance future.  The Adoption Fee for this dog is $__N/A______.
