Story
Amos is a 7 y/o chocolate beagle mix who came to HBHR with a large group of beagles from a hoarding situation in the summer of 2023. It has taken a long time for any of these beagles to become socialized, but Amos has finally made it! Amos has good house manners with the use of a dog door. He will occasionally mark the food bowl of another male but that is more to do with alpha status than manners! He rarely destroys toys and leaves things alone unless they have touched food in the last month! His food drive is all beagle! Amos plays well with the pack and enjoys a good chase. He is alpha and will do best in a home with a more submissive partner. Amos has only recently started allowing people to pet him and really enjoys the attention. He does well around kids and would love having young people to chase around a yard! Amos has not made it to snuggling yet but seeks out one on one attention. He will get to that point, and it would be wonderful if he has a family of his own when he is ready for that next step!

Story
Violet is an 8-year-old tri-colored beagle/hound mix. She is up to date on all vaccines and has been spayed. Violet received a weak heartworm positive test and is on heartworm treatment. She is 18” tall and weighs 40 lbs. Violet is a sweet girl and a wonderful momma to her puppies. She enjoys playing with other dogs and dog toys. She is well behaved with people of all ages and other dogs. Don’t let her age fool you, Violet loves going on walks, and she gets the zoomies every afternoon. She is leash, potty and doggy door trained. She is a very calm and easy-going dog who likes to take naps. She is also curious and loves chasing squirrels in the backyard. Her barking is minimal yet on point when someone rings the doorbell and when she needs to go outside/come inside. Violet is the perfect pet for a family interested in a loving, fun, and low maintenance mature dog. She’s ready to be adopted into her loving fur-ever home.”

Story
Levi came to HBHR along with several beagles rescued from a hoarding situation over 2 years ago. Levi was aged at 7 when rescued but all the dogs were in sad physical shape. I doubt if Levi is 9 years old. His coat has no grey and is his are bright! He has gained more pounds than he needed to but looks healthy at 26 pounds! Levi had a bonded buddy who died last summer. Since his loss of Cyrus, Levi has been more social. He comes out into the yard to interact with the others often and feels comfortable coming into his caretaker’s apartment to find a comfy place for a nap! Levi has great house manners. He rarely plays with toys and has never chewed on anything other than a milk bone! He is sweet natured and enjoys pets from people he knows. Levi has gone for an over-night visit with a volunteer and did well. He walks well on a leash. It will take Levi time to warm up to his new family, but it will be worth the time and effort!

Story
Shiloh was rescued from a family who could no longer care for him after adopting this 8 y/o boy from an area shelter. He has a beautiful lemon coat and has a solid muscular body. We will call him a beagle mix but it is anyone’s guess what his DNA profile would look like! Shiloh is house trained and never gets into anything. He loves his toys and tennis balls and is rarely seen without one. If you ask him where his ball is, he will go on a search to find one and will bring it to you in hopes of a few rounds of fetch! Shiloh gets along with the other dogs in his foster pack. He rarely joins in on any of the games but does enjoy a group howl when a squirrel is sighted! Shiloh was surrendered to HBHR for obsessive circling behavior. His constant bumping into cabinets and walls had turned him into a yard dog with little human contact. With HBHR, he would bang his head into window frames and walls so often that his head had to be shaved to treat the multiple abrasions! Once he was diagnosed with OCD, he was started on a medication that has stopped the behavior completely! Shiloh is great around people and kids, especially if any of them will toss a ball for him! Shiloh is loving and a favorite with all visitors. He deserves his own family so please consider making Shiloh a part of your family!

Story
10 y/o Annemarie found herself in a shelter east of Houston. This funny looking beagle mix was too sweet to leave there. She was positive for heart worms and overweight, so needed these last 3 months to lose a few pounds and start feeling feisty again! Annemarie has great house manners and never gets into anything that does not belong to the pack. Her one real love is to chew the fuzz off tennis balls…leaving a trail of yellow fuzz through the house! She loves to chase after the pack and boss them around. She can be a grabby old lady at times, but usually gets along with everyone. She is part cat in that she loves to groom the coat of any dog that will tolerate having a bath! Annemarie loves attention from her human. She would be a perfect companion for someone who is not very active but could take this little one for walks so that she continues to get into shape! Please give this girl a chance to be part of your family!

Story
Bessie is a beautiful beagle who is seven or eight years old and weighs twenty pounds. She was found in a rural area by a good samaritan, and brought to a Houston area shelter. She was in rough condition so the shelter contacted beagle rescue to take her into our program. She had multiple parasites, yeast infection in ears and on the skin, required dental cleaning and extraction, and a benign lump removed. She is currently on a prescription diet and a prescription shampoo and ear flush, and has regained good health. It seems that she might have had a good home at one point because she was previously spayed, was heartworm negative, and she seemed to have learned some basic commands. She sits for a treat and she can catch them in the air without missing. She responds to "leave it," and will come running in from the yard when called, if she's not totally occupied with something too good to leave! She loves riding in the car. Bessie is a very high energy dog and is quite athletic, able to jump up on furniture, and has even been known to get up on the desk chair and open up a drawer with the Lindor truffles inside -- and has helped herself to a couple of them! She would not be suitable in a home with small children or fragile dogs because she just barrels through life at top speed. There are a couple of bad habits that need to be disclosed. One is that she is super strong on leash and pulls very hard, to the point that she needs someone with good balance to keep up with her even though her foster mom has a lot of training experience and has worked with her for nearly six months, but without much success at the excessive pulling.. She gets so excited out in the world and just can't contain her enthusiasm, plus she is very strong for such a small beagle. She is highly food motivated, and has had a couple of scuffleswith other dogs over food. Another bad habit is poop eating, and that too has been difficult to control. She is given a deterrent chewie with her meals but nonetheless it is still occurring, and the best plan is to follow her with a poop bag. And lastly, even as a senior dog she still will get ahold of something that does not belong to her, and will chew it, especially if it comes from the trash! She is normally not one to sneak off into a closet for example though, to find something interesting to chew, because she mostly just wants to be wherever the humans are; therefore will only chew things if she gets left in boredom on the other side of a baby gate. Like all beagles, she will require a securely fenced yard. So now that we've covered the bad habits, here Is the good news. She is excellent on house training, sleeps quietly in a crate all night and waits patiently to be let out in the morning. She knows the commands of sit, wait, and leave it, and does it fairly consistently. And unlike many beagles, she will actually come when she's called and will run in from the backyard to the house most of the time! Teenagers like her because of her energy and her fun loving personality. People who want a walking companion would get a lot of exercise with Bessie as a companion. Someone who enjoys taking a dog on car rides and out for errands would love having Bessie because she's always up for an adventure and she behaves well in the back seat of the van. She loves going to the park, and her idea of a really fun time is to go to Galveston for the day. She gets along o k with other dogs after an initial period of adjustment, but she's not really a player, so she can be an only dog. Her current foster home is a townhome with one shared wall, and she does not seem to be bothered by noise next door unless they let their barking terrier outside -- and then she can't resist joining in. She is very loyal and loves following the humans all around the house. Bottom line, if you can handle an adult dog that still acts like a puppy, is strong enough to pull you on a bike without having to peddle, will clean up the table if you leave anything unattended, and if you do not have small kids or small pets, then you can have a really fun and beautiful friend in Bessie!
