Story
Allen, neutered male, 1.5-y-o, 36-lbs If you would like to give ALLEN a forever home, please contact abetterchancerescue@gmail.com OR log onto abetterchancerescue.org to fill out online application With a pair of big eyes, on a seemingly oversized head — compared to his small and bony body, little Allen wandered alone around the orchard. He tried to keep out of sight from people, even when the volunteers were doling out food for him. Apparently, he was deeply haunted by multiple attacks in his short three months’ life. After Allen was rescued, his physical revealed that he was severely anemic. Under the loving tender care of his foster family, Allen slowly gained his trust toward people around him and started to play with other dogs in the household. Still, he’s not too comfortable being held by people, but great improvement has shown as time goes by. Allen is now a lively, playful and happy pup when around familiar environment. He is super mellow and well behaved by nature, only a little shy around strangers, especially toward men. He gets along well with other dogs and cats. He’ll be a great addition to family with dog! Story
I adopted Magnum from the Santa Cruz shelter in January 2024 and he has become increasingly aggressive since coming home with me. He is a doll with me but he tries to attack anything else that moves - cats, lizards, squirrels, my chickens, young children, people, and all other dogs. The shelter thinks he is about 3 years old. I don't know anything about him prior to adopting him. I walk him regularly (often very long hikes) and I have been training him since day 1 with the help of 2 different trainers. He also takes doggie prozac (FLUoxetine) daily. He continues to be really aggressive to anyone but me, which has made it very difficult for me to lead a normal life and have family/friends over. He does great in his kennel and seems to be a one person dog. He has a very strong prey drive. I have to put a muzzle on him whenever he has to be in close quarter with other people (e.g. car rides). It breaks my heart but I cannot keep him.

Story
Meet the marvelous Martha! Martha came to the Shelter as an owner surrender after her previous guardian was unable to continue caring for her. Martha has been a gentle giant through the transition from her backyard to the Shelter. Martha previously lived with four small dogs and coexisted nicely. Martha is currently hanging out in a foster home. The foster parents report: “It’s going great – Martha’s been super easy to handle. She lives for pets. She’s met kids and other dogs and has been a total sweetheart with everyone. She seems to be slowly getting livelier.”Martha has been low to medium energy. She enjoys sniffaris (slow walks where she can explore the world) and doesn’t necessarily need to run marathons every day with her adopter. Daily walks will be crucial to helping Martha lose weight as she is a bit of a bigger girl than she should be (100lbs!). A home with other dogs may be a fit provided they meet at the Shelter prior to adoption. We do not have any history of Martha with cats. If you’re looking for a gentle giant, come to the Shelter to set up a meet and greet with Martha today!

Story
Meet Terry! She`s looking for a soft place to land in her golden years. Despite being a senior, Terry has lots of pep in her step and will surprise you with her energy level. She enjoys playing fetch and going for walks. Terry can be selective about other dogs so she`ll likely thrive in a home as the only dog or with a well matched similarly sized dog. Terry has been around children in her previous homes and has done well, but she`s not great with cats, livestock or small critters.Through April 30th – all dogs over 40 lbs have a ½ off adoption fee! Big dogs have lots of love to share so consider adding one to your family today!
