Story
Penny is a 12 week old shepherd-mix who has been living it up with her three siblings and three resident dogs (in foster care) for the last two weeks. Penny is a smart, active, and confident girl. Among her siblings, she`s usually the head of the pack, curious and lively. In addition to being extremely clever, Penny is very affectionate and eager to connect. Penny will need daily exercise, potty training, and a regular structure around which she can integrate into her new family. She would love a dog sibling and is untested with cats. *Puppies can be extremely mouthy, and Penny and her siblings are no exception. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.

Story
Meet Portia, the Belgian Malinois Siberian husky mix. Portia arrived to the Shelter as a stray so we don’t know much about her life before the Shelter. After a day of decompression, she was relaxed and ready to interact with staff and volunteers. Staff have reported that she enjoys sniffing around the exercise yards and then checks in with her person and often getting excited. During her dog to dog interactions, Portia has had a spectrum of reactions – interested in sniffing and then playing with some while taking a bit more time to warm up to others. We suspect that Portia had some limited dog socialization experience prior to arrival at the Shelter so adopters should be patient with her as she settles into the home. High traffic areas like dog parks and beaches may not be good for Portia from the get go. She may enjoy a canine companion in the home provided they meet at the Shelter prior to adoption. Portia has enjoyed digging at the Shelter and finds it enriching. Adopters may want to consider a dig pit (like a big, deep sand box for dogs) to give her safe, appropriate outlet for that behavior. We do not have any history of Portia with cats or children.Portia`s adoption fee has been sponsored by a generous donor! Meet Marnie, the adolescent Malinois. Marnie arrived to the Shelter as a stray. She was a bit nervous upon arrival and took some time to decompress. We have observed that Marnie is a bit of a gentle, sensitive soul and will need a patient adopter to help her blossom. With time, she has warmed up – and has been enjoying interaction with staff members. Marnie has met dogs and prefers more of a gentle play and coexister rather than a tactile, intense play session. If you are looking for a sweet pup to blossom into a more confident dog in your home, consider meeting Marnie today! The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. Story
Meet Milo, the German Shepherd. Milo came into the Shelter after his previous guardian was unable to continue caring for him after moving from a ranch to an apartment. Milo primarily lived outdoors in his previous home and has experience around horses, chickens, sheep and other dogs. It took a few days for Milo to warm up at the Shelter but he has been social and amiable after a decompression period. Milo has met a couple of dogs since his arrival at the Shelter and has done well. Another dog in the home may be a fit provided there is a meet and greet at the Shelter prior to adoption as well as a thoughtful introduction in the home. Although Milo has primarily been outdoors, we anticipate he will likely adapt (and ultimately enjoy) being a part of the family with some outdoor lounging on sunny days. Story
Leo is a 12 week old shepherd mix who would make a great life and trail partner. Spending a couple weeks in a foster home, Leo has endeared himself to each of the resident dogs and people. He is good at enjoying quiet time in between adventures but is, like his siblings, energetic. He would thrive with a family who directed his ample energy and curiosity towards all the milestones of puppyhood- basic obedience, leash walking experience, regular exercise (mental and physical), and bonding with his pack. Leo shows the intelligence and vigilance for which shepherds are known. This sweetpea of a dog is ready to bond! Iris is a 12 week old shepherd mix, the smallest among her siblings in stature only. Iris loves games of chase and yard romps; she also initiates a lot of wrestling with her siblings. She is a rugged and tenacious dog who has made quick friends with the resident dogs. Iris would do great with a variety of active homes. She would love a sibling but is untested around cats. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption.
