Story
Diego is an approximately 1½-year-old mystery mix weighing just under 50 pounds. His story with BENCHS began when he was discovered curled up beside someone's deck near Courtland, Minnesota. We don't know much about his life before arriving in our care, but we're slowly getting to know this handsome, expressive boy, and he's been showing us just how much personality he has!
Diego is a wonderful combination of adventurous, affectionate, and just a little bit opinionated! He's a curious boy who enjoys exploring the world around him, especially when there are interesting smells to investigate. During a recent outing along the river trail, Diego showed us what a lovely walking companion he can be! While he does occasionally pull lightly on the leash, he's very responsive to gentle corrections and redirection. He seemed largely unbothered by passing traffic, unfamiliar sounds, and people making noise in nearby parking lots. Rather than becoming overly distracted by everything happening around him, Diego was perfectly content to keep his nose to the ground and continue exploring. One of the sweetest moments of our outing happened when we stopped to sit beside the river. Diego decided that sitting next to his person simply wasn't close enough and crawled right up into their lap for some affection!
Diego is also proving to be a pretty clever fellow! He already knows "sit" and "leave it," and has demonstrated a nice response to the recall cue "come here." He's very food motivated, which should make continued training both enjoyable and rewarding. One particularly endearing quality is how incredibly gentle he is when accepting treats. Even when he's excited about a tasty snack, he takes it from your hand with the softest little mouth. He also enjoys toys, appreciates a good cheek massage, and seems to genuinely enjoy spending quality time with his people.
As for his breed? Your guess is probably as good as ours! Diego is a bit of a mystery mix, although we wouldn't be surprised if there's some Husky hiding in his family tree. He certainly has a few Husky-like tendencies, particularly when it comes to expressing himself! Diego is a talker, and he's not shy about sharing his opinions. Whether he wants attention, has something on his mind, or simply feels the need to contribute to the conversation, Diego likes to use his voice to communicate with his people. His future family should appreciate a dog with a little extra personality and plenty to say!
Diego is still settling into life at BENCHS, and we're excited to continue learning more about him as his personality unfolds. So far, he's shown us a delightful mixture of intelligence, curiosity, independence, and affection. At just a year and a half old, Diego has so much life ahead of him, and we're hopeful that his next chapter will be filled with adventures, companionship, and plenty of opportunities to curl up beside the people he loves.
