Story
Meet Hawk — an adorable 8-week-old Bernese Mountain Dog puppy with the perfect mix of playful energy, sweet curiosity, and clumsy puppy charm. This handsome boy is incredibly attentive and already showing signs of being eager to learn. He loves engaging with people, watches closely when spoken to, and seems to catch on to commands quickly.
Like any young puppy, Hawk is still learning what is and isn’t appropriate to chew on. He loves toys of every kind and enjoys having plenty of safe options for chewing and play. With continued supervision, redirection, and consistency, he is making great progress.
Hawk is very social and thrives around other dogs, both big and small. He enjoys exploring the yard with his foster pack and is learning important social skills and play manners from the older dogs in the home. He is also becoming acquainted with cats and approaches them with gentle curiosity.
Inside the home, Hawk is still very much a puppy and requires supervision. Furniture and chew toys can seem interchangeable to him right now, but he is learning more every day. He has a beautiful soft puppy coat and recently experienced his first bath — which he wasn’t entirely sure about — but with time and positive experiences, grooming routines will become easier for him.
At his veterinary appointment, Hawk weighed 10.6 pounds and was considered slightly underweight. His foster family quickly realized he had not yet fully transitioned from soft puppy gruel to dry kibble. Once his food was softened and mixed with canned food, he happily cleaned his bowl. He is currently thriving on Nulo puppy food with freeze-dried raw toppers, probiotics, and supplemental canned NutriSource food while he gradually transitions to kibble. Because Hawk is a large breed puppy, proper nutrition during growth is extremely important, and his future family should be prepared to continue supporting his feeding transition as needed.
Like many rescue puppies, Hawk arrived with Giardia and was immediately started on treatment along with probiotics and pumpkin to support his digestive health. He is responding well and continuing to improve.
Hawk has received two DAPPV vaccines and his Bordetella vaccine, but he is not yet fully vaccinated. For his safety, his adopters will need to avoid public dog parks, pet stores, trails, and other high-traffic dog areas until his vaccine series is complete. Safe play and exploration at home or in a private yard are perfect for him at this stage.
Hawk’s ideal home will understand the needs of a breed puppy and be ready for all the fun, training, exercise, and structure that come with raising one. Because he will grow into a large, powerful dog and is currently a clumsy puppy who doesn’t yet understand his size, families with very small children or toddlers should carefully consider whether he would be the right fit. An active family with large breed experience — especially familiarity with Bernese Mountain Dogs — would be wonderful for him.
Hawk is a loving, intelligent puppy with so much potential, and he is ready to find a family committed to helping him grow into the amazing dog he is meant to be.
