Story
Mater - 5 years, 65lbs, Bernedoodle, Neutered  This dog is eligible to join our foster-to-adopt program. Please email fostertoadopt@socialteesnyc.org with the animal’s name in the subject line if you are interested! Want to straight up adopt? Submit an adoption application at socialteesnyc.org Thier Foster Parent Says: "Mater is 5 yo., 65 lbs, and a TOTAL lovebug! He is extremely gentle and loving. He is GREAT with both people and other dogs. He is extremely affectionate and loves to give attention. He is potty trained and follows commands. He will cuddle with you in your bed until it is time to go to sleep, then he prefers to be in his dog bed in the room with you. He sleeps through the night and even sleeps in the next morning! Mater enjoys a morning walk followed by his morning feed. He is a hungry boy and will eat his entire meal! He will even be sneaky and check the sink after for some extra snacks :) He is tall enough to actually put his whole head in the sink and scavenge the counters for any extra goodies he can find! It's best to keep an empty kitchen sink, clear kitchen counter, and maybe tuck away any fragile items sitting out that he can reach! He is very strong and gets very excited for his walk outside so he tends to pull on the leash a bit-- keep two hands on the leash at all times! He will empty his bladder a few times during the walk. After his morning walk and feed, he wants to crawl back into bed for some belly rubs!!!! You have to keep the belly rubs going or else he will tap you with his paw to let you know he wants more and more! He loves the top of his head scratched and behind his ears as well. If you try to stop, he will lay down on you! Mater then needs an afternoon walk where on this walk he typically poops and he will pee a few more times! We then give him his lunch. He is given treats throughout the day for exhibiting good behavior and being a good boy! Mater also LOVES bully stick- he will try to work on the stick and finish it all at once- DO NOT try to take it away from him while he is working on it- he does not like this. Unless he leaves it on the floor and you want to tuck it away, but do not take it from him while he is working on it! Mater is new to NYC so he may be distracted by people, sounds, etc. but he does not seem frightened or overwhelmed by any of it! Maters nighttime routine consists of an evening walk, dinner, and one more short trip outside to make sure his bladder is empty! He is then more than happy to curl up with you while you enjoy your nighttime TV show, book, and a warm cup of tea! Mater does not enjoy barking, he only finds a reason to bark if he hears a knock at the door! He is not yet a kisser, but he will sniff you and rub his nose against you. Mater is a very smart boy and will signal if he needs to be taken outside to poop or pee (scratching at the door with his paw, looking outside the window)- if you do not pick up on this signaling and if he has an accident in the home, he will feel extremely guilty about this and just give him some TLC to make him feel comfortable again!" Level of dog ownership experience needed:INTERMEDIATE: This dog will need significant structure and plenty of daily exercise, training, and mental stimulation – 90 consecutive minutes of movement in the morning plus potty break walks and brain games throughout the day. The adopter must have relevant primary care experience with a similar breed, temperament, and/or energy level. (Primary care experience includes ownership, fostering, or dog sitting as an adult, not a dog you grew up with.) Energy levelMEDIUM: Needs a daily 60-90 minute walk or window of quick paced exercise (minimum) in addition to potty break strolls (10-30 min each). Also needs significant socializing opportunities outside the home and mental stimulation at home like tricks training practice, chew items, and puzzle toys. (This is regardless of dog size – many small breeds were designed for lots of activity and will exhibit unwanted behavior when they’re understimulated.)  TOLERANCE TO CITYCity pup POTTY TRAININGYes COMFORT LEVEL WITH STRANGERSSocial butterfly BEHAVIOR WITH CHILDRENYes for most ages RESPECTFUL BEHAVIOR WITH OTHER ANIMALSYes MOUTHY BEHAVIORPast this stage SEPARATION ANXIETYPast this stage LEASH MANNERSGetting the hang of it CUDDLE BUG LEVELHigh JUMPING ON PEOPLE TO SAY HELLOCalm greetings CRATE TRAININGNot at all Medical statusHealthy as far as we know. Up to date on their DHPP, Bordetella, and Rabies vaccines; heartworm tested if coming from the South or Puerto Rico ; spayed/neutered; microchipped; treated with dewormer upon intake How this dog ended up with Social Tees:Most of our dogs come via partner groups who help us save them from shelters where they are at risk of euthanasia in Tennessee, Los Angeles and Puerto Rico. There are very few spay/neuter resources there and many more animals in those areas than there are people to adopt them. Rescue groups like ours bring them to the northeast where the desire for pets like these allows us to save their lives.  PLEASE NOTE: We cannot guarantee any breed mix, exact age, or full grown size (if the dog is under a year old). We do our best with very educated guesses though!  This animal is not at the Social Tees office, all are in foster homes.
