Story
BJ is currently heartworm positive and is undergoing treatment. He will need to return to NMDR for his scheduled care, and adopters must be committed to strictly following the treatment plan as outlined by NMDR veterinarians to ensure his full recovery. Meet BJ, a 5-year-old, 18-pound Bichon Frise who is a bit timid and nervous around new people and new situations. BJ is still learning that the world is a safe place, and he needs a calm, patient adopter who is willing to go at his pace as he builds trust and confidence. With consistency, reassurance, and gentle handling, he has the potential to continue making progress and feel more secure over time. BJ would benefit from a committed adopter who understands the importance of slow, steady trust-building. Having another calm, confident canine companion in the home may help him feel more comfortable and assist in his adjustment process. BJ also needs a fenced in yard as he continues to work on his leash walking skills. A meet-and-greet at the shelter is required to ensure it is a good fit and to set BJ up for the best possible transition into a patient, understanding home. ------ Before being rescued, many of our dogs had limited socialization, so they may need some time to adjust to life as a family pet. Older kids are often a great fit for our dogs, and homes with younger children will be considered based on each dog’s individual needs. Skills like house training and leash walking may take a little extra patience and practice. However, with understanding and a gentle hand, most of these dogs adapt quite quickly. Being a part of their rehabilitation is a truly rewarding experience. To learn more about mill dogs and start the adoption process, visit our website!

Updated Bio! Meet Tracey! Tracey is a 9-year-old, 20-pound Bichon Frise with a soft, gentle presence and a quietly sweet personality. She is still building confidence and can be shy in new environments, taking her time to feel safe and secure. With patience and a calm approach, she gradually begins to show her affectionate, tender nature. Tracey does well in playgroup and benefits from the comfort and guidance of other dogs. A confident canine companion in the home is required to help her continue building confidence and feel more secure as she adjusts. Tracey has several ongoing medical considerations, including lenticular sclerosis, allergies, obesity, and narrowed ear canals in both ears that may require routine monitoring and care. Her adopter should be prepared to support ongoing veterinary care. Our team would be happy to discuss her medical needs in more detail with interested adopters. She is looking for a calm, patient home that can move at her pace and provide structure, reassurance, and consistency. A required in-person meet and greet at our shelter is part of the adoption process to help ensure a good fit for both Tracey and her potential adopters. With time, patience, and kindness, Tracey continues to show she can blossom into a deeply loyal and loving companion. She is looking for a family who will appreciate her gentle spirit and give her the loving forever home she deserves. ------ Many NMDR dogs have had limited prior socialization and may need time, patience, and support as they adjust to home life. Skills such as house training, leash walking, and handling may require continued practice. Progress will vary by individual dog. Homes with older children are often a good fit, depending on temperament. To learn more about NMDR and our adoption process, please visit our website.

**Meet Vinny!** Vinny is an 8-year-old Bichon Frise weighing 12 pounds with a gentle heart and a sweet personality. He is still learning to trust people, but he has been making some great progress and is beginning to discover that people can be safe and trustworthy. Vinny will need patient adopters who understand that building trust takes time. He does best when people allow him to move at his own pace and give him the time and space he needs to become comfortable. With consistency, patience, and positive experiences, Vinny is continuing to gain confidence. Vinny often forms a strong bond with another dog, which is why he requires a home with another confident, well-socialized canine companion. Having another dog around helps Vinny feel more secure and can help him build confidence as he develops a relationship with his people. Vinny also requires a securely fenced yard where he can safely explore and enjoy time outdoors. A calm, predictable home without young children would be the best fit for him and allow him the quiet environment he needs to continue making progress. Vinny has been making wonderful strides with handling and is becoming more comfortable with people. His future family will need to continue supporting that progress with patience, gentle interactions, and a willingness to let him set the pace. With the right people, a confident canine companion, and plenty of time to build trust, Vinny has the potential to blossom into a loving and devoted companion. Story
Meet Jacqueline Sparrow! This 8-year-old, 13.5-lb Shih Tzu is proof that size (and age!) has nothing to do with spunk. Don't let the "senior" label fool you — Jackie has the playful, sweet, full-of-energy spirit of a puppy, no birth certificate required. Jackie (aka Jack Jack) came into her foster home recovering from recent vetting — including eye enucleation surgery (eye removal) due to a congenital "micro eye" — and let's just say the surgery got the memo, but Jackie did not. Her healing has gone great, and these days you'd never know she missed a beat. Her foster family reports she came in like she owned the place. Stairs? She takes them two at a time. People? Oh, she LOVES people — all caps, no exceptions. Belly rubs, scritches, you name it — she is here for all of it (belly rubs especially — she will absolutely never say no). Turns out Jackie is also super smart AND extremely food and treat motivated — mealtime is basically the Super Bowl in her world. She's smart enough to know exactly where her "place" is, and she will sprint to it the second she senses food is coming. Hand her a good chewy and she is one happy, content girl. She's an all-around happy girl who wants to be in your presence at all times: curled up next to you on the sofa, riding shotgun on car rides, or underfoot in the kitchen supervising dinner prep. She also gets along great with the other dogs in her foster home and has even initiated play with them — including her foster home's blind pups, who are still working out exactly what she's telling them, but the enthusiasm is there! And if she's not in the middle of it? She'll let you know about it. Fair warning: this girl is not quiet. But give her a few minutes to make her case and she'll usually settle right down. Jackie is working really hard on leash manners and potty training — both are works in progress, and she'll do best with a family willing to keep at it with her. Out on walks she can get overwhelmed by loud noises, cars, and fast-moving people, so she's still building her confidence out in the big world. Because of this, a fenced-in yard is required for her next home. She's also a certified climber who can clear an x-pen with ease, but the good news is she's doing really well with crate training so far. Jackie may have one eye, but she's got twice the personality. You can apply to meet this spunky girl on our website.
