Story
Meet Rags! With his gentle nature and soulful eyes, Rags is the kind of companion who quietly works his way into your heart. This sweet 5-year-old Bichon Frise weighs just 9.3 pounds and may be a little reserved when meeting new people, but with patience and kindness, his affectionate personality begins to shine. He enjoys playing with his toys, never says no to a tasty treat, and gets along well with other dogs. A calm canine companion would likely help him continue building confidence as he settles into home life. Rags is looking for a foster-to-adopt home while he completes treatment for a severe case of heartworm disease. Because of the extent of his condition, he will need ongoing medical care, strict activity restriction, frequent visits to NMDR for monitoring and treatment, and a family committed to following his recovery plan every step of the way. Rags is currently taking medication three times a day, and his future family must be comfortable administering his medications and following all veterinary instructions. He is also not yet neutered. Due to the damage caused by the heartworms, his neuter surgery carries increased medical risk and will be carefully timed and managed by NMDR's veterinary team once it is safe to proceed. The good news is you won't be navigating this journey alone. NMDR will provide medical guidance, treatment, and support throughout Rags' recovery until he is ready to officially become a permanent member of your family. Because of his medical needs, interested adopters must first qualify as foster volunteers, complete the foster approval process, live within one hour of our Peyton, Colorado facility, and participate in an in-person meet and greet to ensure Rags is the right fit for their home. If you're ready to welcome a gentle companion who simply needs a little extra care before beginning his next chapter, Rags is ready to meet you. Complete a foster application on our website to get started. ------ Many NMDR dogs have had limited prior socialization and may need time, patience, and support as they adjust to home life. Skills such as house training, leash walking, and handling may require continued practice. Progress will vary by individual dog. Homes with older children are often a good fit, depending on temperament. To learn more about NMDR and our adoption process, please visit our website.

Story
Meet Tracey! Tracey is a 9-year-old, 20-pound Bichon Frise with a soft, gentle presence and a quietly sweet personality. She is still building confidence and can be shy in new environments, taking her time to feel safe and secure. With patience and a calm approach, she gradually begins to show her affectionate, tender nature. Tracey does well in playgroup and benefits from the comfort and guidance of other dogs. A confident canine companion in the home is required to help her continue building confidence and feel more secure as she adjusts. She enjoys gentle interaction but can be sensitive with handling, particularly around her face. During grooming, she has shown significant resistance to facial handling, including pulling away and becoming stressed when her face is washed or trimmed. She will need slow desensitization, positive reinforcement, and a patient approach to grooming, especially around the face where hair can easily trap debris. Tracey has several ongoing medical considerations, including lenticular sclerosis (a normal age-related lens change that does not typically impact vision), allergies, obesity, and narrowed ear canals in both ears that may require routine monitoring and care. Her adopter should be prepared to support ongoing veterinary management, including weight management, skin care, and ear maintenance. She is looking for a calm, patient home that can move at her pace and provide structure, reassurance, and consistency. A meet-and-greet at the shelter is required to ensure a good fit for everyone involved. With time and kindness, Tracey continues to show she can blossom into a deeply loyal and loving companion.

Meet Roody, an 8-year-old, sweet and friendly 12-pound Bichon with a gentle personality and a soft, loving nature. Roody enjoys being around other dogs and gets along well with his canine companions. Roody is still learning that people can be safe and trustworthy, so he would do best in a patient and understanding home that will give him time to build confidence at his own pace. With kindness, consistency, and gentle encouragement, Roody continues to make progress and show his affectionate side. Because finding the right match is important, a meet and greet at the shelter is required with any potential canine housemates to ensure it is a good fit for everyone. Roody is looking for a calm, caring home where he can continue to feel safe, loved, and supported as he settles into family life. ------ Before being rescued, many of our dogs had limited socialization, so they may need some time to adjust to life as a family pet. Older kids are often a great fit for our dogs, and homes with younger children will be considered based on each dog’s individual needs. Skills like house training and leash walking may take a little extra patience and practice. However, with understanding and a gentle hand, most of these dogs adapt quite quickly. Being a part of their rehabilitation is a truly rewarding experience. To learn more about mill dogs and start the adoption process, visit our website!

Tina has lenticular sclerosis, a common age-related change in the lens of the eye that may cause a cloudy appearance but does not typically affect vision. She also had the remainder of her teeth removed at NMDR and it is recommended feeding softened food for life to support long-term comfort and care. With time, patience, and consistency, Tina continues to show she can blossom into a loving and devoted companion. ------ Many NMDR dogs have had limited prior socialization and may need time, patience, and support as they adjust to home life. Story
BJ is currently heartworm positive and is undergoing treatment. He will need to return to NMDR for his scheduled care, and adopters must be committed to strictly following the treatment plan as outlined by NMDR veterinarians to ensure his full recovery. Meet BJ, a 5-year-old, 18-pound Bichon Frise who is a bit timid and nervous around new people and new situations. BJ is still learning that the world is a safe place, and he needs a calm, patient adopter who is willing to go at his pace as he builds trust and confidence. With consistency, reassurance, and gentle handling, he has the potential to continue making progress and feel more secure over time. BJ would benefit from a committed adopter who understands the importance of slow, steady trust-building. Having another calm, confident canine companion in the home may help him feel more comfortable and assist in his adjustment process. BJ also needs a fenced in yard as he continues to work on his leash walking skills. A meet-and-greet at the shelter is required to ensure it is a good fit and to set BJ up for the best possible transition into a patient, understanding home. ------ Before being rescued, many of our dogs had limited socialization, so they may need some time to adjust to life as a family pet.
