Story
I am looking for a foster-to-adopt home while I undergo treatment for a severe case of heartworm disease. Because of the extent of my condition, I will need ongoing medical care, strict activity restriction, frequent trips to the rescue for monitoring and treatment, and close supervision until my recovery is complete. I am also not yet spayed/neutered. Due to the severity of the damage caused by the heartworms, my future spay/neuter surgery carries increased medical risk and will need to be carefully timed and monitored by NMDR’s veterinary team. I am currently on medication three times a day, so my future foster-to-adopt family must be committed to following all medical instructions carefully and helping me safely heal during recovery. NMDR will provide guidance and support throughout the entire process. Any interested adopters must be qualified to foster in their area and willing to complete the foster approval process. If interested, please complete a foster application on our website. You must live within 1 hour of our Peyton, CO facility. Rags is ready to find his forever home! Rags is a gentle 5-year-old Bichon Frise weighing 9.3 lbs. While he may be a little reserved at first, Rags has a sweet and loving nature that blossoms with patience and the right family. He enjoys playing with his toys and can never resist a treat! Rags is friendly with other dogs and would likely thrive with a furry companion by his side. He is heartworm positive but has already started treatment—some follow-up care may be needed after adoption. To make sure Rags is the perfect fit, an in-person meet and greet at our shelter is required. If you’re looking for a small, affectionate, and playful companion, Rags could be the one for you. ------ Before being rescued, many of our dogs had limited socialization, so they may need some time to adjust to life as a family pet. Older kids are often a great fit for our dogs, and homes with younger children will be considered based on each dog’s individual needs. Skills like house training and leash walking may take a little extra patience and practice. However, with understanding and a gentle hand, most of these dogs adapt quite quickly. Being a part of their rehabilitation is a truly rewarding experience. To learn more about mill dogs and start the adoption process, visit our website!

Story
BJ is currently heartworm positive and is undergoing treatment. He will need to return to NMDR for his scheduled care, and adopters must be committed to strictly following the treatment plan as outlined by NMDR veterinarians to ensure his full recovery. Meet BJ, a 5-year-old, 18-pound Bichon Frise who is a bit timid and nervous around new people and new situations. BJ is still learning that the world is a safe place, and he needs a calm, patient adopter who is willing to go at his pace as he builds trust and confidence. With consistency, reassurance, and gentle handling, he has the potential to continue making progress and feel more secure over time. BJ would benefit from a committed adopter who understands the importance of slow, steady trust-building. Having another calm, confident canine companion in the home may help him feel more comfortable and assist in his adjustment process. BJ also needs a fenced in yard as he continues to work on his leash walking skills. A meet-and-greet at the shelter is required to ensure it is a good fit and to set BJ up for the best possible transition into a patient, understanding home. ------ Before being rescued, many of our dogs had limited socialization, so they may need some time to adjust to life as a family pet. Story
Meet Roody, an 8-year-old, sweet and friendly 12-pound Bichon with a gentle personality and a soft, loving nature. Roody enjoys being around other dogs and gets along well with his canine companions. Roody is still learning that people can be safe and trustworthy, so he would do best in a patient and understanding home that will give him time to build confidence at his own pace. With kindness, consistency, and gentle encouragement, Roody continues to make progress and show his affectionate side. Because finding the right match is important, a meet and greet at the shelter is required with any potential canine housemates to ensure it is a good fit for everyone. Roody is looking for a calm, caring home where he can continue to feel safe, loved, and supported as he settles into family life. ------ Before being rescued, many of our dogs had limited socialization, so they may need some time to adjust to life as a family pet.
