Jemma was rescued from a neglectful breeding situation in Arkansas during freezing temperatures, where her only purpose had been to produce puppies. Thankfully, that chapter of her life is over. Now safe, Jemma is learning what trust and kindness truly mean. She prefers a slow, gentle approach and will thrive in a calm, peaceful environment. Jemma will need patience and time to open up as she learns how to be her own dog and discovers the joys of life as a loved pet in a real home. I came to Big Dog Ranch as a breeder release after spending my whole life in heartbreaking conditions, used over and over for puppies and rarely touched with kindness. I don’t know what it feels like to be part of a family, and I’ve never even had a leash clipped onto me. The world outside my cage is completely new and sometimes scary. It may take me months to understand that hands can be gentle and homes can be safe, but deep down I’m hoping someone will give me the patience and love I’ve never had. With the right person, I know I can finally learn what it means to be more than a number… to be loved.

Meet Solstice, a 4-year-old Bichon Frise who came to Big Dog Ranch after being rescued from a puppy mill in Missouri. Her past life offered very little in the way of kindness or human connection, so she’s learning—slowly and gently—that people can be safe and loving. Because of her background, Solstice is very shy and timid. Sudden movements or loud noises easily frighten her, and she is considered a flight risk. She will need a calm, patient adopter who has prior experience with dogs, particularly shy or fearful ones. Solstice has a low energy level and would thrive in a peaceful home with consistent routines and minimal chaos. She’s good on a leash, gets along well with other dogs, and is hypoallergenic—making her a great fit for someone sensitive to allergens. Due to her fearfulness and history, Solstice is not suitable for a home with children. However, she would do well with a senior or a quiet individual or couple in an apartment or condo setting. With time, patience, and understanding, Solstice has the potential to blossom into a sweet and loyal companion. She just needs someone who can meet her where she is—and help her feel safe enough to grow!

Tiny is a 11 year old, 5 lb. female Maltese. She was surrendered with her Shih Tzu brother Domino. Would like to adopt them together as they are bonded. Her prior owners husband had a stroke plus she was pregnant and felt it would be best to rehome them since she didnt have time for them. Shes such a cutie patootie. She sleeps above my head on a pillow and does not move the whole night. She is just happy to finally be loved.Her little personality is coming out to and she loves to bark and even play now as well. Her and her brother Domino both enjoy going on walks and our 2x per week trip to the dog park! Fuji is a gorgeous Shih Tzu, about 8 1/2 years old and 15 pounds. Despite his adorable looks, Fuji has been waiting for his angel for a very long time. He needs a single person, with no other pets, who is extra kind, patient, and compassionate, who truly wants to give a special boy a chance, and doesn't mind when he occasionally misbehaves. For the most part, Fuji is a wonderful boy who loves to hang out with people, receive affection and belly rubs, and go for walks. On a rare occasion, something sets him off and he bites. This has occurred when he was in a home with 2 people, and it's possible that he was being protective of his favorite person, although we cannot know for sure. At the rescue, when with one person, Fuji is friendly, nice, and delightful to be with. He certainly deserves a chance at a happy life, and we believe this is a definite possibility with the right person.
